I kinda hope such an ability remains solely the power of the Admin, because it was just getting silly on GBHQ when people would change their name every other week.

The majority of those silly bastards are on the other board though. That's not to say I'm looking for a repeat performance.

It varied depending on the software. YaBB tracked users by a log in name that never changed regardless of the display name, so people were allowed to change their display name at will. PbpBB3 let the Admins check a user and see their name change history, making keeping track of people pretty easy from the Admin point of view.

PhpBB2 only tracked users by user id number, so if a name was changed there wasn't any real way of knowing for sure who used to be who in the database. Net and I let people request name changes, and I usually did it, but doing it that way kept it from happening often and made sure at least one Admin knew who used to be who.

Not knowing much of anything about the Admin functions of VBulletin, I'd suspect that it might be more like PhpBB3, but can't swear to that. As always, this is Chad's decision to make based on all of the factors I mentioned.

I'd only change my username once, and it wouldn't even be a real change. I'd just be putting the “a” in my Venkmen lol. There are some boards which only allow people who pay or support the site the change there username. But it goes beyond that, because only paid members can user avatars as well. It would be really irritating though if people would change it every single week. If a username change feature does happens here, it might be a good idea to limit the amount of changes so we don't all go crazy talking to the same person with a different username name every single week.

Maybe if he decided to allow the users to be able to change their user names he could do it where the user could change his/her name only once every X number of days/weeks/moths

Yeap, I remember those old good days.

I will change your username ace, not a problem. I'd rather not give everyone the ability to do so on their own. Doing so would lead to confusion, and while it might be fun and neat, it would also lead to mass confusion with respect to identity.
