Apatow Productions Officially In Charge Of Ghostbusters 3

Okay, maybe not OFICIALLY OFFICIALLY, but…….

Judd Apatow's name has been attached the rumors about Ghostbusters 3 since they first began, with all reports saying he would be the producer for the film written by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Greg Stupnitsky. Now the production has gotten so close to actually happening that Production Weekly is listing it– and wouldn't you know, Apatow Productions is right there in charge.

Sure, it's not huge news– we could probably have assumed from the first rumor that Apatow would be involved, given that he's the reigning demi-god of comedy. But the inclusion in Production Weekly means the whole thing is actually happening, beyond just Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray getting asked awkward questions about the project's status. No actor names are attached to the Production Weekly piece, but at this point, it seems like only a matter of time before the gentlemen prepare to suit up a third time.

*“Wishful thinking”? :-)…But if this is the way all this is really going , then I firmly believe it's going to blow royally…

(*rant)(*rant)(*rant)

*Apatow and his crew, Stiller, Black, and 90% of the other names thrown around over the last over 10 years or so are of “popular-at-the-moment” ilk… Actors/comedians that specialize in “toilet humor” and “slapstick”, just - in my opinion - can't and won't capture that unique “subtle/dry humor” of the first two films…All those aforementioned actors are good at what they do, but in their own mediums…And the “Ghostbusters-Brand” just isn't their schtic…

*And in the end I could be wrong - Stiller has been “reserved” in a few roles, as has Jack Black…But as long as Apatow is involved I smell trouble…What do I mean exactly? Straight from the horse's, er Apatow's mouth:

Discussing the balance his films strike between R-rated vulgarity and a more wholesome sentimentality, Apatow explained his position as, “I like movies that are, you know, uplifting and hopeful…and I like filth!”

and :

Apatow credits Rogen for influencing him to make his work more “outrageously dirty.”

*Sound like a man capable of delivering an “authentic Ghostbusters sequel”? Nope…Maybe back in the mid-'80's or even the VERY early ‘90’s, but his head has been in the gutter since 2003, and as a result is quite possibly the worst choice for a GB3 short of Platinum Dunes & Micheal Bay…

*Just look at it this way - The “Ghostbusters Phenomenon” as it was, died out after GBII didn't do as was expected…Yes - Batman, Indy, and the others basically BURIED GBII at the box office…But what did everybody hinge the “failure of the franchise” on? GBII…It's because SONY saw how it fared against not only the movies of that year, but how it fared against the original film, and deemed it a “dead franchise”…They shelved RGB and all we got was a short-lived spin-off 6 years later, and a few minor things here and there when SONY saw the opportunity to make a quick buck…

*Now we're quite possibly getting back to a similar state of what was the “GB phenom” way-back-when, with news of the new products and goodies coming out just about every other week, and ALOT to look forward to considering, would you want all of this to go away prematurely cause of a hacken-eyed, malaligned attempt at making the Ghostbusters “hip and current”, and flopping at the box office? After SONY waited this long to take another chance on it?

*I know I don't(*peter)…

*I know that most people over the age of 18 will want to see it because of the actual ghostbusting, classic character interactions, and the witty one-liners from the likes of Murray and co….Not the vapid “gay” and “penis” jokes that are “oh-so-subversive” and like huh huh “cool” of the Apatow camp…And as such if it again goes the route all the media outlets say it's headed, then we might just see the “death” of the franchise all over again…

*Cheers.

yes but what you're saying about Apatow also describes the original ghostbusting team AND ivan reitman before they made Ghostbusters.

They stepped up and removed the slapstick and overt ‘vulgarity’, for want of a better word, that had been a key part of their movie work prior - why shouldn't the Apatow crew be able to do the same? I've seen Paul Rudd play toned down, for example, all of The Office is a far cry from that stuff, and there's Apatow crew in there - look at Steve Carell in Little Miss Sunshine for goodness' sake, that's an AMAZING acting turn.

Relax, actors are not the people they play - if it's a great script, in keeping with the original, all of these people are talented comedians who I should imagine could make it play.

But yeah, that's just the way I see it - and I love Superbad too, so make of it what you will.

i wouldnt really like jack black to be a ghostbuster cuz in most films ive seen him in he is a complete mad head lol i like him alot but cant see him being taken seriously as a ghostbuster like the first movie, serious but funny, the guys crayz lol, ben stilller, i could see playing a ghostbuster, this guy is a tremendous actor and i think he could tackle the role of a GB deffo, will smith, lol as if he would do it, dont no why but could you see will smith being taken seriously as a GB, he is all action, IMO anyway, but to be honest with you all, as long as they got it right and made a movie that could live up to our expectations and live up to the GB standards, i think they could be a success, whoever produces it will have a tuff task to look forward to,

This was expected. It lends more credence to the rumors that it will finally actually be happening. Its again, exciting, but I remain guarded.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, no one is going to put obscene over-the-top toilet humor and pot jokes in Ghostbusters. It won't happen. Aykroyd and the guys are going to still be involved, and they still own the rights. They won't let the movie get made if someone is going to ruin what it is remembered for.

How about this? (just kidding!)

What about Janeane Garofalo taking over Annie Potts? I think she could pull it off.

Well, I've stated before I'm completely in favor of Paul Rudd… in fact, he's among my top choices for a new Ghostbuster.

I hope all these pictures are meant to be taken as these guys playing new Ghostbusters, and just put together as a way for us to see what they would look like in uniform, cuz I'm not at all in favor of replacing the cast.

This is the best statement when it comes to this movie being made in my eyes. I too remain excited but guarded about the prospect of this film being made. I just dont think Aykroyd, Ramis, and Murray would allow the movie to become a toilet humor stoner film.

I actually really like the idea of Janeane Garofalo as Janine…she has the same type of wit for lack of a better term.
