Are GB Fans being Stereotyped as Geeks & Nerds?

I also want to make one thing clear, People who think there isn't a specific “Decent GB Fan” have clearly never met the other side of the spectrum. If any of your “normals” ever met Cliff Roswell in real life you'd wanna strangle him with in 30 minutes or less.

Well I guess you just don't have the same problem as I do NewRecruit. Maybe where you live in Canada people are more cool about stuff and don't have a problem with judging people by what they like even if it is Ghostbusters.

Nobody seems to be experiencing what I'm talking about with this whole GB stereotyping so I don't know what else to say. Guess I just live in a crappy place where people need to judge others because they like Ghostbusters. And have people think that because a car has GB logos on it's doors there must be a creepy geek/nerd behind the wheel.

Hey, canada is on planet Earth too; it only depend of the circle you find; some won't say anything and others will throw everything they can; it's only a matter of education and influences; “communication” is sometimes something very primitive, and it's not surprising to see ‘wisdom’ painted in the image of an old quiet sorcerer/observer or simply the golden age; some people also just can't tolerate someone who find happyness in simple things… sometimes because they were raised by exagerated authority, or some influences turned around them during their development, there's also a saying that “everything liked in the childhood must be ‘hated’ or ‘forgotten’”, an horrible mistake considering that our identity has its roots in the first periods of its existence.

My oldest nephew has around 16-17 now, and he doesn't understand how I can still be interested in a 20 yrs ol movie! If I speak of the movie, I'll receive a funny face, that's for sure :-) Hey, there's nothing wrong with that; it's like music: some likes, some don't; in a cirlce where an idea is not shared, there's no evolution, keep a distance from the picture and interesting elements may be discovered; if he wasn't my nephew, I'm sure he'd be more negative toward me.

Next time you talk movies with people, ask which one they prefer in the “fantasy” category, find interest in what they say and let them talk about their best scenes/lines; at the end, simply say that you like gb for “x” reasons and explain why, it'll be more fun on the same level.

I challenge you to find a group that looks cooler than us. We represent, and we respect.

Ghostbusters Filmation? If yes then, well… errr, yes, in a way, you got a point (^_^)

Let me ask you this NewRecruit. How old are you? Like in your 20’s or 30’s. If so than it’s no wonder you don’t notice people thinking that you’re a geek or nerd for being a GB fan. At that age people don’t speak up against you for stuff like that. I’m a 19 year old and living in America. People will show their dislike towards me and not have any hesitation to do so. Kids my age are out having sex in their cars while listening to their teen pop music and they have no respect for anything from the 80’s. Then they see me a person around their age group expressing an interest in Ghostbusters. They just think oh he’s weird and must be some sort of geek or nerd to like that uncool GB shit. And they don’t give a damn about hiding that expression to me because I’m at the same age level.

You will never see some teenagers expressing the fact they think a guy is a geeky GB fan when the guy is like around 26 years of age or more. And I think the majority of the people who go the extra mile and actually go out in public with their GB props are almost in a way hurting the GB image. Too many of the people who do that stuff are not appealing to the younger kids and it’s just making “me” (because none of you seem to be affected) look like a weirdo. Those of you here that are in your upper 20’s and older don’t think wow did you see that guy in a GB uniform what a loser, his glasses were too big or his hair was dumb looking or his face had pimples. Kids my age will think he looks like a dumb guy because of that stuff and in return will think only geeky nerdy goofy looking people like Ghostbusters.

Uhm…I'm only twenty-two. I live in Georgia. Not Atlanta, either. Suburban Georgia where nerds are pretty easily spotted. Try not to get bitter, BigMac. You're not the first to be ostracized for your nerdiness and you damn sure won't be the last.

EDIT: And ‘glasses too big’? Have ya seen the Coke bottle lenses on my mug?

There's an age range of kids around 10-16 that know nothing about Ghostbusters. I've found a surprising number of younger kids recognize Ghostbusters because their parents, who are in the age range of 25-35, showed them the movies because they loved them. Those kids, combined with the hopeful audience of the video game, create what I call job security.

Well, now I'm afraid to answer, you sound unhappy and you're holding a baseball bat!

At that age people don’t speak up against you for stuff like that. I’m a 19 year old and living in America. People will show their dislike towards me and not have any hesitation to do so.

Like I said, it depend of the circle you find; the age has nothing to do in this.

Kids my age (…) have no respect for anything from the 80’s.

I think that's the problem; you didn't meet yet people who share the same interest, around you. Like jettajeffro said, there's a circle who likes while the other don't.

Then they see me a person around their age group expressing an interest in Ghostbusters. They just think oh he’s weird and must be some sort of geek or nerd to like that uncool GB shit.

Not only weird but, damn, a story about “ghosts” and a giant “marshmallow man”… you got to be kidding! And they hold them in a beam and trap them in a box… “woooow”. And what the ghosts do? They “sliiime”, damn it's stupid! Hey, if it was true paranormal activity, no detector would be able to warn you about what's coming! That movie is a joke! :-)

So what! LOL :p :-)

It's like “back to the futur”, you travel in time in a car at 88mph! LOL! Good luck on the outer side…. BOOM! in anything!

And they don’t give a damn about hiding that expression to me because I’m at the same age level.

Be prepared, the futur will be the same… it only depend of who you're talking to, despite the subject.

You will never see some teenagers expressing the fact they think a guy is a geeky GB fan when the guy is like around 26 years of age or more.

Not “geeky”: weird, bizarre, strange… Ohh, only the look in the eyes says alot. And that's what I feel when I talk to my oldest nephew (^_^)

I think the majority of the people who go the extra mile and actually go out in public with their GB props are almost in a way hurting the GB image. Too many of the people who do that stuff are not appealing to the younger kids

Some people likes costume, some don't.

and it’s just making “me” (because none of you seem to be affected) look like a weirdo.

Here, right there! You said it yourself! You need to change your view about all this. Stop taking this seriously! You're in a period in life where you must stop thinking about what the other people think! Or you will never find happyness in what you like and you will end dumb as them!

Take “So you think you can dance?”, how many style can we see there, and they are all interesting! Why? Because of the maturity in the movements. If the person who invented a dance style has let himself influenced by some childish comments, we'd never been able to enjoy what we see now on tv.

Those of you here that are in your upper 20’s and older don’t think wow did you see that guy (…) what a loser, his glasses were too big or his hair was dumb looking or his face had pimples. Kids my age will think he looks like a dumb guy because of that stuff (…)

As you can see, GB has nothing to do in this. It takes time for someone to get maturity, specialy when his circle doesn't allow him to find evolution…

-

There will always be someone who doesn't like something. And we are all students in the same classroom of life.

Agreed 100%. It is partially up to us to present Ghostbusters the way it should be presented, the rest will occur naturally.

I mean no offense, But your complaining about “being made fun of” doesn't lend well to your case that you AREN'T a Cliff Roswell-type, sir. Where exactly are you attempting to wear your GB gear? Cause if the answer is anything other than Halloween and a Convention then therein lies your problem. There is NO other time when it is acceptable to wear your GB uniform in public unless it's a mass congregation of other nerds, or a costume specific event or holiday.

(out of topic)
Hey, life is full of surprise! I visited a store today and I couldn't believe my eyes when I found this!

I must admit, I took it just to show it on the site (at 2.99, why not) :p :-)

I never thought I'd find the title one day. It's completly new for me.
I decided to post it here instead of creating a new topic since it team nice with the other pic :p
