Barack Obama or John McCain

Well I was holding off on this for a while because of all the controversy that could be raised by this question but I feel that it should be given a shot. So please state your opinions about your candidate but also respect your fellow mans choice and not resort to name calling and name bashing. Lets be more dignified than the candidates are being. Also if you feel that you need to state why your not voting for another candidate give a respectable answer. Like “I'm voting for McCain because I feel that Barack Obama does not have the experience to handle international problems such as The Georgia conflict.” Also this is a world issue because who ever becomes the leader of America will be the one who talks to other nations about important issues so go ahead and state your opinion even if you don't live in America.

MODS if this thread gets out of control please lock it. I don't want any bad blood over this. I just felt that this is to important of a issue to be ignored.

Then why did you start the thread. When it comes to conversations on the internet that can become a war very fast..politics and religion take top prize.

I plan on doing for this election the same I did for the last election…nothing…after all it's the electorial college that selects the president not the popular vote…so no one's vote really means anything…unless your part of the electorial college.

I'm happy for this thread to continue, but the moment we get stupid remarks like:

“I'm voting McCain because Obama eats babies!” (which I actually saw on GBN LAST time the US Presidential Elections occured).

I will lock this down and boot it to the PCU.

Let's be political scientists about this discussion, not campaign managers.

Me personally, I would vote Obama if I were a US citizen, for two reasons, he himself has impressed me greatly with his attitude, you don't need to have had military experience to run a country, sometimes that gets in the way, a civilian leader is there to give the Generals their objectives, the Generals make it happen. Politicians should never micro manage wars. I'm also very concerned about McCain, simply because he has made comments about being happy for the Iraq conflict to continue for 100 more years, which concerns me greatly, as there should be no reason for it to happen like that, we're not actually fighting for an objective out there at the moment, the war itself is over. He also seems remarkably uninformed of how bad the conflict zone actually is, and thinks he can walk safely down a street in Iraq.

Anyone who knows me I'm no liberal hippy, war can be a necessity, the Afghan campaign was quite legitimate in many ways. But one should never be happy about a war lasting practically forever, particularly, when, as I said, it's no longer a war. It's a form of policing now.

I also think this video says a lot about McCain:

I like how there are people who care more about what a President would do to OTHER countries than to our own.

That's how Bush got re-elected, and that's why the economy is in such bad shape. We're not the goddamn world police. It's time to stop giving a crap about “international” situations and worry about our own goddamn backyard.

The problem is, Razor, America does act like the world police, and you have to take these things into account when voting, from what I understand, vote McCain and America will continue in this manner, and vote Obama and things may change….

I suppose however as a Brit, I'm more concerned about your President and his role in the world than his role in US domestic policies.

I'd take that “100 year” comment as a bit of tongue in cheek, or determination.

Obama strikes me as a very charismatic man, and he has a really good grasp of humor which has helped to paint him as being a bit more animated and down to Earth then past Presidential candidates… however depending on the nature of the withdrawel, if it were a mass withdrawel rather than a staggered one over the course of years then I think I'd prefer McCaine to be President just so the withdrawel from Iraq, which support the war or not will be inevitable is done more because it's the right time to do so, rather than giving in to pressure from the public.

The problem is, we're getting nowhere in Iraq. Nowhere at all. I can see us being pulled out of Afghanistan soon, maybe not this year, but still soon, we're doing WELL there.

Iraq? Forget it. No one wants us, we're not helping anyone. It's not as simple as a withdrawel or staying in, it's more complex and needs greater thought, although unfortunatly, nobody considered what to do in Afghanistan or Iraq once the Taliban and Saddam were out of power respectively. So the war has been won… what now?

The mistake with Iraq was that regime change didn't occur in 1991 when the Iraqi public would have supported it, and something major had occured to justify removal of Saddam from power. As it stands right now, I for the life of me cannot currently think of any way to achieve a good end result in Iraq. But pulling out is a bad decision, and staying in is a bad decision.

I will first state that I don't follow politics as closely as I could to get a real feel of what each candidate is really about. I will also state that I feel Obama is a candidate less-threatening to the average American (sick of Washington's shit, and down to earth, blah blah).

HOWEVER

I do have a feeling that we are too eager for change for the sake of change.

Anyone know of a website or some publication with 100% unbiased, straight-forward positions for each candidate? I thought I saw an ad for one ages ago, but didn't bother to write it down. Might be helpful in keeping this thread from going to hell.

I have to agree to a point. We do need to stop being the world police and start caring more about or own situation. However we need to make sure to keep good relations with other nations. I the comment I made in the opening statement I made for two reasons. One is that is a common reason people pick McCain and two I feel that McCain would be better able to handle diplomacy.

But to show that, thats not the only reason I picked him. I also feel that he will cut back the pork barrel spending and inturn lower our Debts. With Obama almost every solution he has to cut back the Debts is also present a program that will increase our debts.

Also I'm glad to see that we are getting mature responses.

Can I ask why you McCain would be a better diplomat?
