Comic History question

Ok, im am really confused with the GB comic timeline here. Last I had heard before I dropped off the radar for a while was that 88 mph was going to release the GB comic. Every comic store in Savannah were utterly oblivious of this, and with no local outlet my interest kinda died. Now that i've come back, there was the manga issue (really mixed feelings about that one but anyway) and when I went to my comic store today, there sitting on the shelf was the GB Other Side that everyone has been talking about. All back issues at my local stores are gone. I read that sticky post defending a Mr. Clavett….now who the hell is he?

Now will someone tell me what the hell is going on? I really didn't study for this and Im lost.
I don't mean the comic story back story but the real history of what the hell is going on with teh comic. Ive read things that sound to my uninformed self that someone was posing a GB comic fraud and everyone got ripped off?

Sebastien Clavet ripped people off. He was the man in charge and owner of 88 MPH, which handled “Ghostbusters: Legion”. He took pre-orders on the hardcover issue of the collection of Legion and never delivered, and began refusing refunds when a lot of people started asking for them.

Clavet's ownership of the license to produce Ghostbusters comics ran out recently, and “Ghostbusters: The Other Side” by IDW was released this year. It received mixed reviews and was overall disappointing in my opinion. There is apparently another mini-series planned to come out from IDW as well.

The manga you referred to is a whole separate entity and not related to IDW or 88 MPH in any way.

Most people (in my personal circle mind you) was more impressed with the manga…specificly the last part of the Manga atleast…than all of the Other qside story

So let me get this straight. The original GB comic from 88 Mph was never published? Never came out? So there are really only 4 GB comics? The 4 issues of The Other Side and thats it? From all the threads in here, I had thought there was about 20+ back issues of the comic that I need to get ahold of.

I read the manga. The problem I had with it was that A) it was Manga, Im not really a fan of anime/manga genre so some of the time I had try to figure out what some of the pictures in the book actually were of. and B) the story at the play with the F-22 or whatever fighter jet. That really seemed outta character to me. Its just not the way I would think the GBs would have handled it

So just to be clear, Ghostbusters Legion was never published or the hardcover just never came out and people were refused refunds on that? Are there 20+ whatever issues I need to try to track down? Are those 88mph or IDW? Did 88mph ever put out anything with GB? Again, the local comic shops only knew of 88mph as a budding young company with no product and (seemingly) with no talent.

and incidently, the main reason i didn't follow this before was I was working in a bookstore and I thought we would be able to get the comic thru my store, but everyone at the home office said it wasn't in the inventory and they couldn't get it because they thought it didn't exist.

No, all 4 issues of Ghostbusters: Legion were eventually published…but the Ongoing series was canceled before it even got started.

Additionally what was supposed to have been a “issue 0” was released before Legion called The Zeddemore Factor was later released at the San Diego Comic Con

The 20+ issues you are thinking of is mostlikely the NOW RGB Comics which I am certain are no longer in circulation

The NOW RGB comics….those are the ones that were put out by Titan books? When i was still working at the book store, they had …im not sure if it was 2, 3 or 4 of these ‘mini’ RGB tradepaper comics. I think they were orginally published back in the 80s for an RGB magazine or they are like the Cartoon Cartoon Comics that Cartoon Network puts out to promote their own shows.

The ISBN on the one I have is 1845761421

According to the front info page, there are 6 compliation books like this one.

Are these the NOW comics your talking about or is there another set I don't know about?

The Titan books are a compilation of mini-comics they had with the Slimer! comics. Each Slimer! comic had a small 1-5 page Real Ghostbusters comic. The other NOW comics are the regular Real Ghostbusters Comics, which were your standard 30 page comic. There are a lot of different ones for these, and I think there are some by Marvel UK, so this one gets confusing lol.

OK, Jim, here's the breakdown (hey, I wrote that RGB comic guide you've seen hither and yon, so I know some stuff).

There are basically 6 main groups here: NOW Comics (RGB in the 80s and 90s); RGB magazine (made the same people who made He-Man magazine back in the day); Marvel UK (a different RGB comic); 88 mph (Legion); IDW (The Other Side); and TokyoPop (manga).

NOW Comics started their RGB comics around 1987. They did 29 issues of RGB, plus 19 issues of Slimer and a 3 issue adaptation of GB2. Then they went bankrupt for a couple of years, then regrouped an published another 8 issues before finally giving up.

Around the same time, Marvel UK started their own RGB series. It was published weekly and had an almost slavish loyalty to the TV show designs-the panels almost looked like stills from the show. The stories were usually short-in both length and intellect. Titan released a series of TPBs. Several of these tales were reprinted in later issues of Slimer (and one RGB fill-in issue in the middle of a story arc!) as well as …

The RGB magazine. It was aimed at 6-yr-olds. There were games and craft projects and the occasional article on real paranormal stuff. Some prose stories, too. They only made a few issues. Nothing else to see here.

Now comes the dreaded Clavet 88mph series in 2004. First came the “Zeddmore Factor” con issue in b&w. Then the 4 issues of Legion, which took a year to do it's 4-month run (to be fair, even Marvel had the same problem with Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine). A monthly series was slated to begin, but money troubles killed the studio. Reportedly, the combined costs of the GB license, the GM license for Ecto-1's likeness and having to pulp the Tron 2.0 tie-in, plus Clavet basically trying to do an entire company's worth of work by himself totaled the joint. I don't have many details about the hardcover cuz I have no dog in that fight, but I think the plan was to do a hardcover collected edition of Legion including a color version of “Zeddmore Factor” and an intro from Dan Ackroyd, and all that $#!+ hit the fan at mach 4. However, Titan did their own TPB of it in softcover, minus Danny A.

Enter late 2008 and the intended co-releases with the game. IDW (the house that licenses built) picks up GB and here comes The Other Side. The TPB version will be/is out (and I know from experience their e-biz works good if you need to order anything).

TokyoPop did their manga take on GB (following well-received Star Trek mangas).

Anything else?

Wow, that is exactly what Ive been wanting to know. Just one thing, is the tradepaper edition of Legion only available from 88mph? Im not sure if i mentioned this or not, but when i went to my local comic shop he acted like a GB tradepaper hadn't come out. Or possibly he just couldn't get it but he acted like all there had ever been was the 4 issue Other Side run. Im guessing maybe he just didn't get the 88mph ones in comic form when they came out. This was the guy who owns the shop so I know its not some pimply little teen with the squeaky voice like on the Simpsons. Anyway, I had figured that the dealers like him would probably get a hold of it if/when it came out. (and you already said it did). I don't know if this sounds like Im not agreeing with you but I do.

Just, do you have to go thru 88 for the tradepaper? Or who do you go to in order to get it? My bookstore doesn't have a listing for it.

BTW- Awesome synopsis dude.

88 MPH never put out the trade… that's what the whole “Clavet ripped people off” thing comes from. Titan Books in the UK got the rights to put out a trade paper, and did so, but it has since become fairly rare.

The Other Side has a paperback coming out, but the Legion paperback never saw the light of day.
