I was thinking about the containment unit that the Ghosts who were trapped got put in. The Question I have is Can it ever be filled up and what happens when it does? They cant empty it so what do they do?

yeh it can be filled im pretty sure… thats why in the game which is two years after GB II the contaiment unit is much larger and more technologically advanced looking to cope with the extra amount of ghosts.

And im almost certain there is an episode of the RGB where it becomes full and all hell breaks loose. but i cant be certain cause i was only a kid when i watched those cartoons.

im betting that there is infinite space inside, if not they can always build another, and anohter and eventually create a wharehouse full of containment units, alphabetized of course:p

The containment unit can be filled up. They even say so in the first movie in the scene with the Twinkie. I don't remember the exact dialogue, but they're worried about the containment grid and talk about how it's getting pretty crowded in there.

Naa, the space is limited, it's surrounded by four walls.

Reading the spirit guide in the PS2 game version, Egon and Ray said they've stoped their work on opening portals to other dimensions, after bad experiences. Not to forget that a portal can allow one entity to not only exit… but to enter too; imagine the overload; I don't think they've made one inside the CU.

There's also a popular belief that each dimensions are linked to the others, Egon would never take the risk of corrupting the balance of the univers by sending entities from one world to an other.

And having so many containment units in one area is soo good for the concept of an explosion of supernatural activity capable of creating a portal to hell… or even hell on Earth…

After watching the sacred first film the other night again, at the point where he is talking about the Twinkie Egon says “Ray I'm worried, its getting overcrowded in there” there being the containment unit, conveying that the system is almost full perhaps?

I've been considering lately if the Containment Unit actually is like some other-worldy location, as shown in the cartoons. But I think it'd be something a bit less glamorous in actuality: the ghosts might probably be stored, conscious or not, crammed together like sardines in a sardine can. IIRC, each ghost trap has a cartridge that physically goes into the CU, so I guess the space would be limited by how many of those cartridges would physically fit in there; the cartridges might not physically stay in there, though. But I'm sure the capacity of the CU could be expanded, and that Egon and possibly Ray would constantly be looking for ways to improve the storage efficiency.
