Doesn't seem like a demilitarized zone

Well in fairness they did take some creative license with comment back in the day.

Having said that, the area was not nearly as nice as it is now.

Back then was the start of the revitalization, that didn't really come full circle until the last 10 years or so with the emergence of art communities like those found in SoHo and Tribeca.

Exactly. I mean, remember, that comment was made 25 years ago. I mean, they could've easily cleaned things up in 25 years.

IIRC, the neighbourhood outside of station 23 (or whatever the number is, I forget) in LA is a really rough neighbourhood… Maybe they were refering to that as a demilitarized zone?

I visited there a couple of months ago. The place is very rough indeed. I still need to posts my pics from that. Wasn't able to schedule a time to go in but sure enough the next weekend it was opened up for a community furniture sale.

In Ghostbusters.. notice there is graphiti all over the building and what appear to be abandoned cars. Its a shit hole.

The ‘demiliterized’ comment was related to how there seems to be no police or support around. Kind of like certain places of New York around that time.

PS. Its a movie.

I was thinking the same thing as well, that NYC has gotten much better since the 80's, thought I hear it went alittle a bit down hill again after 911 with more money/time going to “terrorism pervention” instead of police work. But the demilitarized zone commit was just me trying to include a parapahse of Egon's qoute in the thread title. I wonder how old the 360 pictures on google are? Can't be more then a few years.

Honestly, I just think that alot of things have changed socially since the post WW2 period… Big urban areas like NYC were witnessing the exodus of all the “middle class white people” to the suburbs and the influx of poorer people into the main city areas… In the past 20 years, it seems like the opposite has been happening. Technological improvements in policing and the “financial services” boom brought middle/upper classes back into the city. It's like a San Francisco type area now with a bunch of yupie artsy professional types.

I might not know the exact date, but I certainly know that those google pictures aren't from 1984!

I was just there three weeks ago. (Have the photos to prove it )

The area itself is pretty nice now. All kinds of lofts and cafe's, etc.

Ironically enough, the area is patrol'd regularly by police nowadays.

Again, you have to take into account the creative liberties they took to make it seem like the guys were really starting out pretty low on the totem pole.

If your a GB fan, you can visit all the major movie (and cartoon) spots pretty easily. Almost all of them are right near a subway station.
