Don't like the cartoon as adult

I loved RGB as a kid and I had a pretty good toy collection. Kinda grew up and out of it over the years and then re-discovered my love for the franchise when I was 18 or so. Anyway, when I went and re-watched the cartoons, it took me a while to remember why I enjoyed them so much as a kid. So I can definitely see why somebody wouldn't much care for the cartoons as an adult, but try to appreciate that they kind of kept GB alive for a while.

Also, I haven't been on this 'site in a while. I love the new look!

I think why I like the film, is it is party ground in realty, like Harold Ramis talks about in the commentary on the dvd. The viewer is able to aspect the fantastic, as long the story starts out in grounded in reality and then moves the veiwer into the fantastic elements. For instance in first film, when have buy a (very cool) junker of a car, or “ Ray: ‘this magnificent feast represents the last of the mad money’ Peter: ‘slow down chew your food’” or something to that effect, or in the hotel when Egon points out their wearing unlicensed nuclear accelerators on their backs.

I'm not really following your logic in that the junker car, petty cash, and the hotel scene referring to unlicensed nuclear accelerators grounds it in reality.

Let alone that you're saying that if the story starts out grounded in reality and then moves into fantasy, that it helps the viewer accept the fantasy aspects… well RGB is a continuation of the first movie, so it has already been grounded in reality with the established beginning of the first movie.

Well I also like a lot of the other “Saturday Night live” movies, strips, blues bothers, trading places, spies like us, caddy shack. So it's partly the actors and director. I can't help but feel I am forgetting a movie or two from that list. oh and off topic is meatballs any good? I remember an old promo for ghostbusters referencing it.

Like everyone who post here, when I was growing I use to love all things ghost buster, I have fond memories of the “real” Ghostbusters cartoon, had a fair share of toy as well. But after it went off the air I forgot about the details of the cartoon. Never stoped liking the movies however, as I got older the second flim sort of got worse in mind. But when I got the DVD box set, I watched the cartoon episodes that came as bonus material on those DVDs, I thought they were kind of bad (why does peter sound like Garfield!)(Also I noticed the same voice actor who did slimmer does the voice for Curious George kids on that show on pbs), it was kind of shocking actually. Thought there were a few things I like that wouldn’t have gotten as a kid. In the episode that was suppose to take place after the second movie. Toward the beginning peter better is being silly and singing during a party, which I immediately saw as reference to bill Murray’s Saturday night skits. For the record I know why peter sound like Garfield, it's because I've seen that cartoon fairly resent because it's still in sindcation thought I understant this was camplant back in the day as well. Any way hello I'm new.

so…what exactly didnt you like about it? that it had Voice Actors from other shows?

so does that mean you dont like movies that have the same actors in them?

im not getting the opinion….

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but i really dont see one in here. lol

on that note, i think the show is a rarity and one of a kind. almost all of the episodes were very well written, the dialouge was witty and clever just like the film, and i love the use of various folklore and HP Lovecraft for the central stories. It was well voice acted, all the characters were very well developed. It had its own feel and style. All of these traits of which ALOT of cartoons back in the day and NOW lacked. RGB is possibly one of the best animated shows in Saturday Morning Television, right under Batman: TAS.

Alright, I think that's gotten about as far as it needs to be. I won't lock the topic but I question whether the logic was sound to have made such comments about the show knowing full well that a lot of people are fans of The Real Ghostbusters.

For me I just don't like the story lines. Thought I have to say I much prefer the animation style that the real ghostbusters used, much more then animation used in modern cartoons, which these days is heavily influenced by anime. And let me say I don't hate the cartoon, and I don't deny I ever liked it. It's just it's so unrealistc and (duh) childish. ((*rant)) Let's take the heilcopper from the cartoon which is one of the few vehicles I can remeber. I mean in real life you can't build your own helicopper and fly it, the FAA would come down on you. Also it would be cheaper and easier to just buy one and modify it to your needs, but if they did that in the cartoon they wouldn't be able to sell a cool toy, though to me a ghost busting huey sounds cooler then some made up thing, but that's just me. And slimer being friendly kind of bugs me, I prefer him as a minor recurring enemy. Also l let me make it clear I'm attacking you folks who still like it. May I should watch some of the older episodes they made before they started to use the cartoon as a cash in for toys.

In real life you wouldn't be allowed to run emergency lights and a siren in a major city either. So that's the Ecto-1 out of the movies too!

Exactly, but they were kind of like an emergency service which is why it was ok. On that point, as far as i'm aware emergency services also have vehicles such as helicopters, boats etc so I don't think them having a helicopter was that big of a deal! Someone has to build those vehicles so I don't think them building there own was that big of a deal.

Dealing with a concept of chasing and trapping ghosts, I think having there own helicopter in the cartoon version is the least of the realism problems (*ray)

In response to the original post, I don't see a problem with the opinion you've expressed if that's how you feel, in some ways I actually agree. I recently bought series 1 and realised I don't enjoy the cartoon on the same level as when I was a kid, but I guess that's to be expected.
I deffinatley still do enjoy it though, just in a very different way. When I was a kid the afct it was a cartoon with bright colours, childish humour, talking ghosts and the fact it was the ghostbusters getting rid of the evils that hid under my bed had my attention. Now it's the actual stories which some, as a child, I probably didn't really understand. I also enjoy the more adult humour that would have been totally lost on me as a child and still, of course, the fact it's the ghostbusters shooting the evil creatures that live under my bed remains :-O

I think there's a difference in appreciation, for me personally atleast from watching as a child to watching now.

In response to the cartoon just been a way to make money off toys….if that is true, i'm glad they did it in many ways because I know how much fun I used to have with my figures and the over the top vehicles and characters! I know whenever I played with them it was based off the cartoon series not the movies, even though I loved the movies as a kid. Where as now, if I decided to re-live my childhood and create my own ghostbusting scenario it would be more concepts taking from the films and recently released game as the themes of the film fit my adult imagination in a better way.

They were never an official emergency service in the movies though. I believe that first comes up in the novel “The Return” and again in The Video Game, so they wouldn't be allowed to run emergency lights.

I know, I understand that, I just mean that I don't consider using a helicopter or other vehicles to get a job done is that unbelievable as many organisations do it. They replicate the characteristics of emergency services to get their job done so using similar transport isn't that far fetched. I mean, I could go buy a helicopter and use it if I wanted to =P
