Yeah great, specifics… gotta love them.

The Ecto-1 was never a hearse. True I suppose some in that line might have been used as Hearses. Quite frankly I have never seen a real 57-59 Caddy hearse in movies or films, the fins just aren't umm, respectful looking I guess. I suppose in the cartoons it's been said enough that it was used as a hearse before.

Dan Akroyd wanted a black hearse with florescent lights, but as most of the movie was to take place at night they didnt go through with it, why they chose ambulance over hearse, meh dont know, yeah 59 Caddy Ambulance with miller top (its some funky roof deal)

However in the “Real Ghostbusters” it was indeed a hearse, when they end up in the 50's Winston see's Ecto, runs over and the driver rolls down the window and asks him if he is a friend of the deceased… And there is an episode called “Follow that hearse”

Meh… love cars wink

As 2 wisemen named “Ectoman” & “ECTOI” once said, a 1959 M&M combo… the original hearse with a curse. & ECTOI, personally i think that the S&S cadillac ambulance rocks due to the rear suicide doors.smile
im gone.

Without seeing the Interior of the cars, its impossible to tell if it was a Combo or an Ambulance to start with.. smile The '59 M-M Low Top Limo Style coaches ALL looked exactly the same on the outside. Ambulance, Hearse, or Combo would all look identical from the exterior. The main differences were in the exterior Paint, and sometimes optionsl warning lights.

Judging from the photos that I did see of the interior of both cars, I would tend to lean towards the feeling that they both started out as Ambulances.. (The interior configuration and seat style that I can see in the Photos matches Factory Literature that I have for the 1959 Low Top Ambulance) Although with a better view of the floor and the interior I could be more certain. The Floor of the Ecto-1a seems to look more like an ambulance floor than a Combo floor from what I can see based on the compartments that are there.
