Extreme Ghostbusters discussion

I wouldn't say I loved it. But it had potential, and I wouldn't mind owning it on DVD.

There were a few bits that constantly made me cringe though, such as…

- Proton Packs that are 50% spare batteries, constantly running out of juice after a single bust.

- Fanny Pack Proton Pack that somehow had same power output and battery longevity as the full sized packs. What, was Egon playing favorites here? Was there only enough parts to build one of these? Thirty-plus pounds of equipment is good enough for Janine and the kid in the wheelchair, but the tough talking Goth girl can't hack it? Isn't that kinda sexist in a show that tries REALLY hard to be PC?

- New York isn't THAT wheelchair accessible, the packs have serious kick-back, the GBs try to avoid elevators on busts, Garrett can't roll and shoot or turn and shoot simultaneously, Garret never sets his break… Though I'm sure Garrett was an inspiration for some younger viewers, there was just nothing practical, or even smart, about having a GB in a wheelchair. I mean Egon could have easily rigged him up with a super chair that could climb stairs and move by reading Garrett's thoughts or eye movements… but then Garrett would be dependent on the chair instead of being self reliant… so…

- Young team = lots of drama fluff.

But like I said, I liked XGB enough. I liked the dark atmosphere and the soundtrack. There were just some wrinkles… or things that the writers could have worked with to make some really interesting stories, but instead glazed over leaving serious plot holes.(*winston)

P.S. RGB ended in 1991, this show picked up six years later right? How come the RGB's seemed to age several decades in those six years? :p
Actually I think it was supposed to take place in the future. Like in 2004 or 2005. Egon is I think supposed to be in his mid to late 40s.

It's meant to be 1997, the year's clearly visible on a calender in the Firehouse… and there was nothing to suggest it was meant to take place post-millennium.

and Egon just turned 40 in the crossover special

I personally enjoyed EGB, not to the extent of RGB, but enjoyment was still had

Never mind that EGB's trap probably weighs as much as the Proton Pack…

Figured this would be an appropriate thread to start talking about EGB toys…

I just found a box in my attic that contained all four of the EGB regular figures (Kylie, Egon, Ed, and Roland) unopened and, more or less, in mint condition. Apparently, I bought them at Sears years ago (according to the box), but I completely forgot I had them.

I don't imagine these are worth anywhere near as much as unopened RGB stuff, but does anybody have a ballpark idea of what something like this might sell for? There doesn't seem to be much going on with eBay aside from a couple of Kylie figures and the occasional loose figure, so it is tough to gauge the value.

Would they be worth holding onto for a another 13 years?

BTW…this is my first post at the “new” Ghostbusters Message Board. I used to post WAAAAAY back when Bill Emkow ran the board. I used to post under this same handle (misspelled version of Janosz Poha), so I guess it is good to dust off the old screen name.

I had the Extreme Ghostbusters Ecto 1 and Proton pack. The ecto 1 is missing some pieces but it still makes all the noises when you press the button on the roof. I wasn't too interested in Extreme Ghostbusters at the time. My old real ghostbusters action figures fit in the ecto 1.

It's doubtful the toys from the series will appreciate anymore than they already have, due largely to the short run of the cartoon and how less popular it was compared to The Real Ghostbusters. They're going to be about as valuable as they'll ever be… but I couldn't put a ballpark estimate on their value.

While they may not have been the most popular, those kinds of toys end up being worth the most because people didn't want them and they fall by the wayside until a a day when nobody can find them.

The whole idea of a team of accredited scientists being replaced, quite easily by a group of annoying college kids defaces the whole idea of what Ghostbusters was to me. They were scientists who had studied the supernatural to the extent of it being normal to them. The incredible was seen as mundane by them, and to think this random group of kids could have that same attitude of the incredible being anything but just doesn't fly with me.

Thats what bugged me as well. I think XGB was great as a teen horror show, but as a GB fan I felt offended that the original cast was swept aside for some spiky haired teenagers. It was like “Hey forget about those old guys, these are the trendy new Ghostbusters!”
As a series it was well made and I enjoy watching it, but it has that bitter aftertaste.
