Some don't? First I've heard of it.

The ones that don't might–might–be from a later run. Kenner's RGB line started out wonderfully but got incredibly sloppy as time went on (Egon losing the white lenses from his glasses, Winston taking on an almost Barack Obama-like skin tone, etc.):-)

I keep meaning to post my unboxing of a perfect firehouse made in 1990. It does not have the purple bricks. The one I had when I was a kid I got around 87 did.

iv seen the unboxing of a brand new one on youtube, it didnt have the purple front. i thought it may have been a sticker or extra section but i think you guys are right.

i have another question too!

can the streams on the kenner first series proton packs be changed? i have a backpack without a clip but want to use the stream from it with a good backpack, is this possible?

About the only thing I can think of is going into the wand with a very fine tweezers and undoing (or cutting off) the knot inside. Either that, or you could–with a LATER ISSUE pack–push out the cord that runs through the cyclotron and undo it.

The early-issue packs have the cord going through the bottom of the pack, which is as it should be. It is held in place by a small piece of plastic. Later-issue packs simply have the cord going through the cyclotron bracket.
