GB3 analysis

I'm wondering about the true possibility of a GB3 being made. Does anyone at Sony/Columbia Pictures realize that it'd be the 20th anniversary of the first movie? I can't think of a better way to acknowledge this and celebrate it than by making GB3. Yet it all seems to have grinded to a halt as of 2000. Look back on the rumours and news of GB3 on the net and some recent quotes by Dan Ackroyd, one can't help but think its dead. But there has never been any true word from the studio itself about its fate.
Here some links with the lastest word just as of last year:
http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/250/250079p1.html
http://www.cinescape.com/0/editorial.asp?aff_id=0&this_cat=Movies&action=page&type_id=&cat_id=270338&obj_id=27407
Its pretty much the same words from Ackroyd but its still has extra bit of info on the rights and stuff. When he mentions Harold Ramis on set of Bedazzled means its been 2 years since anyone has spoken about doing GB3. With the anniversary coming up why should this not be explored again? Its quite clear Sony needs another franchise, because all they've got is Spiderman 2, MIB (if theres a 3rd) and a lingering follow-up to Mask of Zorro, a DEAD Godzilla. I think they need GB3. When you look at all the past news about GB3 on the net, they were almost willing to do it without Bill Murray. But one of those last quotes from Dan Ackroyd was when they had a discussion of GB3 they all pretty much agreed they weren't going to do it without Murray. Murray owns 1/5 of the rights. Yet the other rights holders Ackroyd, Ramis, Reitman and Sony/Columbia. Don’t these things go by the majority? All want to do it except Murray (who I think is being cautious). It was said It’d costed over $100-$120,000,000 budget. Well gee didn’t they spend that on Spiderman and MIB II? Look at how Sony can market their movies months ahead of release they’ve already got commercials on TV for both films. That campaign doesn’t come very often from the major studios. No reason GB3 can’t be marketed like this as well.
GB3 needs to at least be out by summer 2004 if not by halloween 2004 at the latest (capitalize on Halloween would be neat). It would need to start filming by late 2003 to make it for 2004. I’m just wishful thinking still, but GB3 would make it for me. With or without Murray, the other GB’s training new ones sounds great and I think would be really funny. I think the story is excellent idea of Hell leaking over into NYC from a mirror Hell NYC causing chaos even sounds better than GB2’s story was.
Were seeing some old movies coming back with sequels: T3, Indiana Jones 4. Why not GB3?
http://www.aintitcool.com – type in “ghostbusters 3” with asterisks. One of the 5 news bits really souded like BS (long text one).
We should always click on these sites everyday just to make Sony curious about their hits:
http://www.ghostbusters.com
http://www.ghostbusters3.com
http://www.sonypictures.com/spe/help_feedback_index.html - email Sony so they know we are want to see GB3 by 2004.

What're your thoughts everyone?

PS: to ecto1a2001, where did you get this info about GB3 from Columbia Tristar's site? I couldn't find it. A link would be great.

Nice research job. It's good to see some people are doing their homework. Let's just hope for the best. Keep all the info you can find coming. I like the idea of using the hits on Ghostbusters3.com as a hint to sony.

HEre, I did my homework a while back and I would be more than happy to continue to. Check out my post for the numerous websites and address's of this movie and actors:
http://www.ghostbusters.net/disscussion/ghn/3/28558/

ps I starting to wonder, GB3 hasn't been talked about in quite some time (other than on this board) Dan Aykroyd may have been dead serious when he said GB3 is “dead”. We all keep talking, but really, the truth is it has been dead and could possibly stay dead. I want gb3, so don't get me wrong but I am begining to wonder. That's all

I forgot to mention about Harold Ramis' website.
www.haroldramis.com
I know that there is a thread but I thought I had to mention it on this post of mine. Whenever his site becomes “active” we should all just ask him about the deal with GB3 and if the anniversary is even being acknowledged or whatever. This may be our best chance to communicate with GB's co-creator/writer.
And Sony also has Stuart Little on their franchise list which I forgot to mention up there.

There's somewhat interesting articles from USA Today:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/movies/2002/2002-06-05-matrix.htm
Then if you miss it there is a link on that page about Hollywood sequel fever:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/movies/2002/2002-06-05-sequels.htm

GB3 isn't mentioned in either and I can't help but wonder if its safe to say its dead. Although it was only about the sequels that are active and not the dead or rumoured ones. It says that the IMDB website is the one that notices the movies that are checked on the most. GB3 isn't on the USA Today or the IMDB site but IMDB does have a ghostbusters 1999 listing, which is strange.
Also Sony has Charlie's Angel 2: Halo on the way. Maybe they do have enough franchises.
Thats 6 franchises I've been able to indicate. But you can't help but have hope based on that sequels article.

Bo Holbrook started this thread about “don't blame Bill Murray/GB3” thread on the GB movies boards section:
http://www.ghostbusters.net/disscussion/ghm/1/34651/
Could the reasoning of Bill Murray be right? Getting his own rights to have a say? He thought that GB2 may not be good (at the time) and is preserving the integrity of the GB franchise? Yet there were times in the GB3 rumours/news of the late 1990's where he seemed willing to particapate. If there's no more films or cartoons than what use of a franchise is GB then?
Dan Ackroyd said that next time he approaches the gang for a movie/project it'll be something new. Well when will they ever work together again? They haven't all had hits after the GB movies and but have sporadically worked together with only some of the gang. Ramis and Murray a few times, Ackroyd & Reitman in Evolution. Ramis had Analyze This as a big hit.

I've kept looking at a site
www.countingdown.com and when I look up gb3 only one result shows up.
Three people posted thoughts and the last guy says this (meeting Dan Ackroyd):

“hate to rain on your party but i met(no im not lying) dan akroyd at a shopping mall any way i was a bit rude cause he looked tired and asked him for his autogragh and i got it *grin* anyways i asked him about gb3 and he said that bill murray wasent going to and harold ramis was doin somthing and schedules cnflicted and he said the script was done but the others where doing diffrent stuff so who knows if they free up there schedules but i vey mutch doubt it.”

Interesting if this guy isn't lying and also when he met him (posted on 03/07/2002). Until they're schedules free up?

But like I said before when are they ever going to work together? It practically has to be GB3 for that to ever happen.

I can't believe Dan Aykroyd let the film die like that. I was looking forward to GB3 all this time. Why can't Bill Murray change his mind about all this? And Sony doesn't want to make it without him. But if someone were to buy Bill's rights from him, would they be able to do the film without Bill? Too far fetched to be possible. Looks like my GB3 script might come in handy if I can finish it up. Bill would be on screen briefly in the film. Would that work?….

We'll never know…
