I hate to say it, but after reading this, I feel like the movie will never be made:

Bill has been the sole reason GB3 hasn't been made over the past two decades and he never even wanted to do GB2 back then. I don't see him making another rare exception to do a sequel.

This is not true.

There was a time when Bill had agreed to do GB3, but then Sony wouldn't do it because Aykroyd wanted to make it into 2 more movies and they didn't want to commit the budget.

That, coupled with the fact that he seems rejuvenated about the franchise since the video game, and this is just pure conjecture, and really just being negative for negative's sake.

But hasn't he always been reluctant to do a GB3 at all? I remember the many articles over the years with him saying he didn't want to do another sequel and also remember reading articles before GB2 went into production that he didn't want to do a GB sequel at all, unless I'm mistaken.

That's been what's been publicized, but it really just seems like he cares about his past material and doesn't want to diminish it with crappy sequels just to make money. He has integrity, and wants his work to as well. That's all it is really. He'll do a sequel if its good (like the original script for GBII that they then changed so much by Day 1 of shooting that he was really upset).

I understand he wants to do a good sequel that doesn't ruin the series, but he also seems to have a genuine disliking of sequels and a reluctance to ever do any at all.

From Howard Stern today, grabbed the transcript from ProtonCharging.com.

The big news: “Bill Murray has looked at the script!” I knew this would happen. Tomorrow the news will be that he picked up the script.

"Howard Stern: Is it true that there is a Ghostbusters 3 and that you’re the problem and you will not sign off on this? Do you know about this?
Bill Murray: Yeah, I guess I’m the problem. Before I was an asset, now I’m a problem. There’s a script somewhere , but I haven’t read it yet.
Robin Quivers: So you have no interest?
BM: Well, I’ll get to it… I gotta get to it – I feel bad. I got a message and I think people – I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings – it’s not the foremost thing in my mind, so I don’t think about it.
You know, the studio gets excited every 10 years or so. What they’d really like to do is recreate the franchise. I remember when the new Ghostbusters was going to be Chris Rock, Chris Farley and Chris Crane… Kris Kringle… someone – that had it together.
HS: Is that a threat to you? In other words, did they try to threaten you by saying we’re going to put together a new Ghostbusters and therefore you guys will have to go do it?
BM: It’s not a threat, it’s sort of businesslike – they’d like to keep it going. There are still kids today that watch this movie and love it, it’s still very popular. They still sell a lot of toys and everything."

Which most likely has to do with the fact that sequels are almost never as good or better than their predecessors, which to him diminishes the value of the original.
