Just use the god damn original song and leave the rest up to the composer.

F**k everything else, we don't need any f'n side songs just so the stupid studio can release a CD in conjunction with the movie. All we need is orchestrals and the original main theme.

I think somebody struck a nerve. Orchestrals can't always carry a story on their own, have you heard Elmer Bernstein's scoring for when the ghosts escape the Containment Unit? Or for the section where the Ghostbusters are leaving City Hall for the Shandor Building? Sure, had they been used in the film then we likely wouldn't know any better… but in the face of ‘Magic’ and ‘Saving the Day’ I think they're the weakest parts of the score.

Plus, if it had all been score then we'd never have had the ever popular ‘Ghostbusters’ from Ray Parker Junior… a song which would appear for all intents and purposes to have entered the lofty halls of fame all the good songs go to.

That's why I said the only song we need is Ghostbusters.

“Orchestrals can't always carry a story on their own”, maybe when the composer is mediocre but not when someone like John Williams or Danny Elfman is at the helm.

I reitterate, as good as Elmer Bernstein was, and he is still a legend despite having passed on, the film benefitted from a mix of scoring and commercial music.

A scorer isn't a hack if the film people decide to mix score with commercial music. Look at Back to the Future. Alan Silvestri's score is perfect and there's a nice mix of music.

Yeah, that was one good one that had a mix of both.

…what other famous movies has Elmer Bernstein compsed?

From what I could dig up on IMDb:

The Rainmaker
Trading Places
An American Werewolf in London
Stripes
Airplane!
Animal House

Hmm… must be more films there that I've just never heard of…

I think Ray Parker Jr. should just do a revamp (orig song with better sound tech) of the song. With the sound technology nowadays, it might be kick ass.

It'd be interesting to see what he could do with today's technology… I'd just hope it wouldn't be like Bono and his line in “Do They Know it's Christmas?”*

* I'll explain, apparently Bono wasn't happy with how he sung the line “Well tonight thank God it's them, instead of you”. In the… must've been the 2005 revamp they did for Band Aid 20 they got a bunch of comtemporary artists to sing a new rendition… and he resang the line a lot quiter, and frankly with a lot less power to it… his orignal was better.

It didn't help they invented some lines so some two-bit rap artist called ‘Dizzy Rascal’ could sing on it… But that's a personal gripe…
