I'm just now getting the first issue. I'd grade it a C-

I liked it early on, but past that I agree with everyone who has said there are too many convenient occurrences in the story like the time traveling Ecto and Peter/Rachel simply blasting the train to rid themselves of a mob of ghosts. I do like the idea of the guys being separated in time though, because it will hopefully give each issue a different take. I just wish it hadn't been Gozer's Father that did it.

For some reason the copy I got had the problem of every other page being stuck to the other at the corners. I have two circular tears now on all those pages. I can't have that, so I'll need to buy it again somewhere down the line.

Issue 2 is on its way.

I hear ya. I live in the city and I haven't been able to find issue #2 or the virgin incentive cover of issue #1.

Hopefully shipments were delayed and stock is replenished tomorrow (for issue #2 anyways). I'll let you know, have you tried Graham Crackers Comics?

Hey Chad… here's the incentive for issue #1: http://www.grahamcrackers.com/products/ghostbusters_displaced_aggression_1_incentive_cover.html

You'll have to pay shipping (unless there's a store pick-up option, since I know you're in Chicago).

But yea everyone… Graham Crackers Comics (http://www.grahamcrackers.com) has all of the covers of both issues in stock as of right now.

Fritz Babbles About Ghostbusters: Displaced Aggression #2

(Spoilers Aplenty. You have been warned)

Well, another solid chapter. I guess we've already found the weakness, such as it is, of the story format, though: Chapter One was all about Venkman and Rachel. Chapter Two has Venkman, Rachel, and Ray Stantz. We'll add Egon next issue, and by the time we get to issue 4 Winston's “spotlight” will be pretty crowded out by the other Ghostbusters…oh, yeah, and having to defeat that Koza'Rai character to boot.

And that's not even mentioning the upcoming Janine short in #4, the previews of which have been drawing some mixed reactions from Janine fans. I think it's the implication that she'd be off shagging some pirate when she's lost in time; we had our fill of Slut!Janine in GB2, thank you, so please, just stop it.

Sigh…just because I've gotten used to Winston and Janine being crapped on, doesn't mean I'll ever like it.

Anyway, back to GBDA#2

Venkman and Rachel land in the Sixth Century, and find themselves accosted by King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot. Fortunately, when they drop Ray's name Artie's demeanor changes completely–Ray's become a great friend and ally of the kingdom.

When Venkman finds Ray, it's a nice touch that Ray's first suspicion is that he's some sort of wraith posing as Venkman–I guess Pete should have stuck with his real uniform instead of this one Rachel gave him, right? Anyway, Artie convinces Ray that Venkman is the real deal, and what happens next is probably the most intriguing scene in the book:

Remember how we thought Rachel's story had some holes? Ray realizes the same thing…then Rachel pull some sort of Jedi mind trick, resets the scene, and Ray has no questions about her authenticity. All of a sudden, Miss Mary Sue is a lot more ominous–and interesting.

There's some sloppy editing here, with mention of “proto-packs”. More than once. What next? The Ghostbusters' mascot constantly being called “Slimmer”?

No appearance, believe it or not, by Merlin. Maybe he was too busy putting Sir Bruce Sans Pite into that tapestry.

Ray is sporting a beard and mustache, which anyone familiar with my own work will know I can't complain about; Vaguely-But-Not-Close-Enough-To-Aykroyd-To-Get-Sued Ray with the beard and mustache looks more like Kevin Smith than Dan. He also gets to sport one of those new flight suits with the red seams.

Oh, heck, I did my own little tribute to it:

Anyway, the Ghostbusters, Rachel, and Artie go off to fight dragons and Morgan Le Fay, Artie's half sister. They freeze the dragons using a trick “foreshadowing” the video game that still doesn't make any frickin' sense to me, and Venkman beats Morgan by pretending to turn; he sweet talks her and somehow traps her with his “proto-pack” when she'd distracted.

No. It didn't really make any sense to me, either. If there'd been a ghost trap on the ground or something, or attached to the pack like in the cartoons, I'd get it, but it looks like she somehow gets sucked into the pack itself when Venkman “overloads” it. This isn't from the game, is it? I thought for sure they still used ghost traps.

Anyway, that weak spot aside, the two Ghostbusters and mysterious ally say their goodbyes to Artie and leave in the ECTO-10. Next stop, the future.

Another fun read, with some good jokes and bits. Looking forward to #3.

I agree with Fritzy's review…

The Mary Sue is much less Mary sueing than we thought *yay*, and the Overload Trap/Pack thingy is just strange. Same as the Proto-Packs…was it too much to add an N in there?

Besides the missing N and the Overload issue, I found this chapter to be well done and a good, strong issue. 2 down, 2 to go. IDW don't fail now…

I f'ing called it! :)

I'm hoping that the only reason she has these traits is because what we know about her is a lie, and that she's a demon with an alterior motive in helping the Ghostbusters.

But onto the review.

Displaced Aggression #2 continues to build up the strengths of issue one.

Once again I feel obliged to extol on the artwork, it continues to make good use of colour and light, and the depictions of Morgana and Arthur are of the classical design we could imagine. Ray's lab held a few nice visual elements as well, depicting equipment he's built using period technology (IE: Pretty much none!), and the stained glass window was a amusing touch.

The spectral dragons were also a great element (being a welcome assortment compared to The Other Side's collection of Angels, Demons and human spirits).

Storywise, things have gotten even better, now that he has a glimmer of hope, Venkman is back with avengence with his smarm, and Ray, as previously noted, is appropriately giddy about all things paranormal.

And then of course, I think Mr. Lobdell deserves some praise for creating a character so universally disliked, and then throw us the curve ball in issue two about her. Nice work.

The spelling errors are a minor negative, but not enough to detract from the whole issue (Proto-Packs may not be a mistake).

It was also a nice touch, seeing something akin to a Dark Matter Generator beam, even if it wasn't meant to be a deliberate reference…

As for Morganna, her trapping could be because she's ectoplasmically satuated… and her being sucked into the Pack could be due to Rachel's ‘modifications’. She's already mentioned she ‘fixed’ the problem of crossing the streams, and may have worked some other mojo on them as well, like she did with Ecto-10.

I greatly look forward to Issue 3, and I feel I can say that if the remaining two issues remain on-par, or go even higher in quality, then this will easily replace TOS as IDW's best Ghostbusters miniseries to date.

I'm dying to read Issue 3, now.

I can't believe everyone missed what I actually thought was…

an overly obvious hint in issue #1 that Rachel wasn't all she seemed: her referring to the townspeople as “humans”.

good point…never realized that before…

though issue 2 has a much more obvious nod towards the answer to our Mary Sue…or in this case Rachel Unglighter
