About Us: Part 1
It all started around September 2003 when I wanted to join a fanfiction team. I wasn't so much a newb (was around in 2002 back in the “Classic” GBN days) but too naive to actually think any of the then big ones would accept me. My original idea, Florida Ghostbusters, had been nixed when I realized that I couldn't very well have a franchise take over a whole state (although, as proven by the Ghostbusters West Coast the following year, you can have a franchise encompass a certain area.), as well as my friends that had joined me decided to leave the project at the last minute. I decided then that I could go the other route and make up a franchise. I posted a thread with some ideas for a name. This is that thread and some of the then poll choices .
I did lean super-heavily towards Teen Ghostbusters and there still does exist two outlines of stories and a few promotional drawings made showing two guys and a girl fighting a monster. The only things that came out of it was that, whenever I get around to it, it provided a sense of background for my eventual Ghostbusters Doom Patrol character CJ London (even then my character had that odd surname ) and a villian named Adrik Thorsen, at that point more like Voldemort than the Ra's al Ghul personality I've made him out to be. Some elements may end up being used in a story outlining CJ's origin someday.
I can't really explain why I settled on the name “Doom Patrol”. Maybe it had to do with me just then getting into Morrison's run on the comic, or that I really liked how that name rolled off the tongue (although Rob, Mr No-Ghost to you all, has more than once told me of the innuendo involved with the initials DP ). It was Andrew, the first person I ever asked to join up, who backed me up on the name (he might not remember, but I do) and it would stick forevermore.
An example of how I attempted to get people to join up, in this PM from November 14, 2003 to Brian (ProtonPack666) Roig:
I'm really just beginning it, and thought you'd be perfect for it. The teams name is tenatively called Ghostbusters: Doom Patrol, and was wondering if you wanted to join up. So far, its only me, but I'm scouting around for others. I'm looking at at least four or five, which is a manageable number. Let me know by pming back, e-mail, or even im me at Beatleman22. Catch ya later
After our first story, Fritz caught on that more than 90% of the eventual lineup consisted of members who participated in the Wrestling Thread on GBN called Black Dawn (which gave us the title to our first story as well).
Andrew was the first person I asked. We didn't start off close, me and Andrew. We locked horns in a JSA vs. Ultimate X-Men thread and a Best Green Lantern poll on GBN. But we eventually found a common interest in wrestling thanks to the Wrestling Thread there and we talked a whole lot about stuff: comics and wrestling mostly (we still talk about that today!). His character in Doom Patrol is a slight exahggeration of his real life self from about a year or two ago (catch him online and ask him about the video he made of himself tombstoning his brother). At that time I wasn't as cocksure of myself as I am now, and mostly approached members of the Black Dawn thread for potential membership.
The original lineup included myself, Andrew, his friend Spencer (from the Digital Tachyon webforums) and Brian, but something happened and I ended up not using Spencer in the end. I can't remember if it was Andrew or Brian who made the next suggestion, but the best thing that could have happened next came in the form of Mr No-Ghost himself Robert “Statler” Smith. I was a little nervous asking him at first (after all, I'd seen a few pics of the guy and I thought he must have been one bad dude on the level of Holbrook) but I was immediatly swung by how cool this guy was. Like Andrew and Brian, I would have hung out with this cat in high school given the chance. Rob's joining up was a critical time in the crew's formation. We were all writers, but Rob was and still is the linker between us. Even back in the Black Dawn days he was the pseudo-leader of it all, and while I have a hard time of showing it I am often grateful of making his acquiantance.
Brian's coming into the story isn't complicated: I asked him, easy enough. Dunno what all he thought of the whole thing at first, but so far he's been a real trip. He's contributed on some important things regarding his character and has even done his share of writing.
These four would be the stable lineup from December 2003-January 2004 (coinciding with Rob's joining up). COMING SOON: Sarah and Erin's involvement, “Black Dawn”, “Till The Clouds Roll By”, the writing process and the NOMAD Controversy.
