Ghostbusters game, a technical look

I'm studying computer games as a degree and thought it would be cool to have a thread that dicusses the game/s from a technical point of view. That said, if anyone has any questions about the game and how a certain part of it would work, why bits are and aren't included, then feel free to fire away and I'll try to answer the best way that I can. And so, I'll start.

The game engine, WOW. That is pretty damn awesome pyshics engine and I'm really impressed of how good it looks and how fluidly it plays. The items bouncing around because of the slime blower gun really reminds me of Half Life engine, the monsters that stick you in their tongues. Very realistic.

The crowd control seems a bit smaey in the sense that they all look the same AI and just different models/textures. They all run the same way, I guess I just expected a bit of varation.

Err, that's all that comes to mind.

I am actually surprised that someone didn't think of a thread like this sooner. It's a really good idea.

I dunno why I didn't to be honest. Seeing the tech demos just made me really excited.

I dunno what “smaey” means, I'll assume you meant “messy”, but they have a whole set of different AI reactions prepared for the people of NY. Some of them will run at the sight of a ghost, while others will stand by and cheer you on as you try to subdue it. I agree that the running animation could use a little more variety. Not everyone runs the same way. There are plenty of other little details they could throw in there, but nobody's going to be focusing that much on the CG crowds during gameplay, are they?

I think he meant “samey”, as in they all look the same running. It doesn't look organic. I'm not sure why they do in that part - it might be that running out of the building like that, they all just tend to stick together. No room to mill about, and with the herding code drawing them along, you get two boring streams of people running in similar lock-step. Using the same run is ok, they just may not have introduced speeds yet, which would mix it up a lot.

Notice the later clip in the streets - with a lot more room to move, you get a lot more variation and it looks a lot more panicky. I'm curious about the firehall - one of the early promises was that you could wander the firehall, but they're sitting on that I guess (it'll make for a good surprise in later press.)

Technically, the game looks alright. I mean, compared to Killzone 2 or Gears of War 2, it looks terrible in comparison, but that's expected when you liscense the franchise to a mediocre developer. Sierra already ruined the Bourne Conspiracy. Also, from what I hear, the game's engine is really old and the developers heavily modified the engine.

But I like the game's art and some of the particle effects look nice. The only thing I'm worried about is the gameplay being too repetitive. Hopefully we have some interesting puzzles. Other than that, I'm happy with the game.

where are you getting that engine is really old the developer even said its a brand new physics engine that they built. I mean watch the tech demos the graphics looks a lot better on those video then in the trailer. Look at how well the physics work in the game its unreal.

and another thing. Sierra is the publisher. They don't make games.
They put the money forth to manufacture , copyright and promote games.
So unless your disc comes to you scratched from the get go , or saving your game causes a crash on your system, They couldn't have ruined the game.

I played The Bourne Conspiracy beginning to end , got all the achievements
and am still playing it. It has some issues with balancing but its a good looking good playing game.

If you think the game is bad , the people you should be talking about are High Moon Studios in San Diego. They were responsible for all gameplay and graphics aspects. And the game was powered by the unreal engine 3
that powers gears of war.

Thanks for the correction. High Moon Studios are to blame, IMO. I just wish a more talented developer, like Ubisoft Montreal or even KojimaPRO would've made the Bourne game.

UE3 powers GoW. Yeah, GoW looks great. Bourne doesn't. In fact, all UE3 engine games look the same. Personally, engines built from scratch are better than UE3, like Naughty Dog's ICE engine or Insomniac's engine for Resisance and Ratchet n Clank. Also, Bourne Conspiracy should've opted for a better hand to hand combat system, like countering/timed button presses. Not QTEs where you watch mini cutscenes and have no control over. Also, the driving portions sucked, the cover system was terrible, and there was some serious clipping issues going on. Such a shame, since the Bourne franchise is tied with Ghostbusters as my favorite films.

mdp872105:

That's just what I heard from someone on NeoGaf who works for 1UP. Could be true, maybe not, but just because there's a new physics engine doesn't mean the engine itself is new, which is why I said heavily modified engine.

Look at Splinter Cell Conviction. The game was running on UE2.5, yet the game looked amazing due to Ubi Montreal heavily modifying the engine.
