Hi, all. I am rewatching Ghostbusters II right now (for the billionth time). I don't know if it was because I was really young when I saw it or if I am just a die-hard fan, but I LOVE this movie. Even to this day. Not as good as the original, but a fantastic follow-up. Now, I know that many fans, including some of the guys who worked on it, hate the flick. What does everyone think? Do the majority of fans hate it? Why does everyone dislike it so? I would like to see what everyone thinks.

I watched my dvd of this last year some time while bored in my room. I have to say even though it's just a watered down version of the first movie, it's miles ahead of today's mindless junk we have posing as comedies, like scary movie stuff, american pies, whatever. You can tell it was made during more enlightened, and perhaps tougher times when movies relied more on intelligent scripts than fx wizardry or crude humor. Like geez, the older I get, and the more movies get dumbed down, the old school style of film making is becoming more nostalgic. If there is to be a gb3, I hope it's done in the old style and what I mean by that is at least the movie attempts to play things straight and make the story believable unlike a lot of comedies today that just toss in everything and the kitchen sink and hope it works.

i enjoy Ghostbusters II way more than the original.

When I first saw it at 7, I hated it cause it scared the sh*t out of me. Re-watching it several times years later, I absolutely love it now, and prefer it over the original.

The original I found to be more light-hearted, and was definitely more focused on the comedy aspect than the plot aspect.

Ghostbusters II was much, much darker, and was more plot-centered, and I think RGB prepared me for that kind of.

Did I mention I'm also a die-hard Vigo fan? I also think he was a far more formidable foe than Gozer; it's gotta be said.

a lot of my friends don't like it?? but i think it is a fantastic sequel.
When you consider Most sequels nowadays are poor, you find that Ghostbusters 2 is great movie and is nearly as good as the 1st one.
It has everything that a follow up should have and that what makes it so good.

One thing I also notice is that even Harold Ramis knows that the general audiences don't really get Ghostbusters. He referred to Ghostbusters as a “serious comedy”; basically, the comedy is important, but not so important that you ignore the plot. I see the franchise as more sci-fi with comical elements. But the whole point is that most audiences don't pick up on the whole “plot” aspect of it; to them, it's a comedy. Don't forget it's these same audiences that also think the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man was the main enemy in the first movie.

Note- it wasn't; it was the form of Gozer chosen by Ray as “the destructor”.

Most can't comprehend that.

And I still say it was superior to the original. I love them both, but prefer the sequel.

Nope, sorry. Because Stay Puft was Gozer, he is as much the main enemy as the bubble-suited woman with the flat-top.

And again, I think you're not giving the first film enough credit, the plot is not lost amidst the comedy.

My memories of GB 2 are intertwined with my final year of living in California(1989). I lost my wife in April of that year and all my friends were doing double duty to keep my spirits up. That being said, two happy memories stand out:
1) I saw GB 2 in Van Nuys opening day. When Venkman tells Vigo about living in California's beautiful San Fernando valley, we all cheered-because that's where we were when he said it!
2) one of my friends worked at Panavision and got to rub elbows with many film crew members. The lady in charge of cast and crew apparel for GB2 extended the offer of authentic embroidered sweatshirts for all of us. There were three design styles to choose from: the GB2 logo; GB2 logo and your name; GB2 logo/your name/Ghostbusters2. I chose the logo and my name option. For some reason I had to wait a couple of weeks longer than the rest of my group…but when mine came it was charcoal gray..close to the GB 2 style suit color! (everyone else got the standard heather gray sweatshirt color.) Yes I still have it and yes it still fits.
Probably more sentimental than anything else…but GB2 will always hold special memories for me.

Say what you want about GBII, but it was a solid sequal, I loved it and at times i enjoyed it more then the first. Theres tons of memorable scenes and lines, it's certainly not as bad as some other sequals.

Had there been no GB I and GBII was the only film it would probably be praised as one of the best comedies of all time. The shadow of the first film really makes it appear worse for a lot of people.

one thing that just hit me like a ton of bricks… if the Ghostbusters didnt save the day, then that guy on Peter's psychic show would have been correct about the end of the world being on new years eve. ooooo.
