Thats the thing, Ghostbusters doesnt go out of its way to prove or dis-prove God exists either. I have a long winded theory, but for now I will keep it too my self.

I know, which is why I think saying anything negative about this movie is just hog wash. Although the movie does make mention that some biblical things can happen.

As Peter said: “You are looking at disasters of Biblical proportions.” It doesn't dis-prove any religion, but only says that “somethings are true that are written in ancient text.”

I cannot speak for everyone but my parents really had a problem with Ghostbusters and RGB when I was a kid. They are strictly religious and I remember asking them why they had a problem with it years later and this was the answer I got:

“Because it had ghosts in it”

Apparently my parents believe that the existance of ghosts in the story disproves the existance of God. Something along the lines that if ghost wondered the planet then that proves there is no heaven and no hell, and if there is no heaven then there is no god…

Thats crazy, Ghosts don't disprove or prove the existence of Heaven or Hell, thats like saying “The existence of a military proves that a nation is preparing for war.” (Okay not the best thought out counter-point but you get the idea…I hope.)

This is why I am a Jesuit. Ever see the movie the Exorcists? I sure most of you have, but those priest were Jesuits who are the only religion that believes ghosts are real.

No offense to everyone here, but I believe that all religions are ignorant to ignore such things that might exists such as ghosts.

(*winston) Never said I agreed with them. But one thing you have to remember is that both of my parents were born in the 40's and raised in a different era and raised differently. What they individually believe is hardwired into them from their own parents views and beliefs.

Personally I claim no religion…specifically the one I was raised in.

While I respect holding onto your roots is important, it is terrible for one to not except that things change. You don't have to agree with everything that comes around, but to ignore such things is ignorant.

Ghostbusters is something I enjoyed as a kid and something I will always enjoy. My daughter loves Ghostbusters and I have no problems with her watching….even though I can't explain things to her yet when somethings come up. lol

As Harold Ramis said: “That's another thing I have to explain to my kids”

I think that the key point here is that Ghostbusters is clearly fiction. It does not aim to be taken seriously and it obviously doesn't portray the real world. Therefore even if it did contradict or go against religious beliefs what would be the problem? It's not meant to be taken seriously so why can't people with certain religious beliefs except it for the work of fiction which it clearly is.

I mean, I believe in science but I don't have anything against superman just because he defies the laws of physics!

People have problems with “fiction” as they cannot understand it means it is “not real.” Same goes with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and a few other get defiled despite it being fictional.

It's why I feel the Catholic Church could do well to remind themselves that these films are fiction, and aren't being preached as truth.

Now we'd all be in agreement if a film came out, which made some outlandish claims and claimed it was all true, then that'd be different and the Church coming out and making a statement would be understandable.

But Ghostbusters? Such obvious fiction shouldn't incur the wrath of the Vatican. They also need to learn that saying “this film should be boycotted” is only going to benefit the PR campaign of the movie they're talking about. “Banned by the Vatican/pope” is a statement that only serves to interest people in the so-called “controversey”.

lol That is true Kingpin. My art teachers did tell me that in order to become a famous artist…the easiest way to do it was to piss off the Christians. No offense to anyone on here, again.
