Just an update on the drama for you all.
Glad you got your money back. I'd love to take some credit as Sherlock Holmes, but as you said… it was PayPal.
My own transactions, and possibly several others, are currently a different matter.
I contacted both of the mobile numbers that I have for the seller. One was purchased less than a week ago at Cash Converters in Nottinghamshire, not far from where he lives in Derbyshire. This is good, because UK laws require address and name details to be retained for a good while when accepting second hand goods. Cash Converters should have those details in their books for Trading Standards. He sounded fairly genuine. Also said he's getting calls from loan companies on that number. This means that the previous owner was getting credit checked a lot by getting a lot of quotes, which is accessible to these companies, meaning he's in financial difficulties. Sounds like a motive.
The other number is a little different. I left several messages, received no reply. The voice on the voicemail was someone in his 30s-40s sounding. I tried to call, was cut off. I send text messages, was told the owner is in his 60's and doesn't know anything about it, has owned the phone for 4 years. I asked if I could call, “no, I'm in spain and it will cost me”.
He supplied an area code via text which is located in Bodmin, a long way away. Denies knowledge of Starscream Entertainment, Matthew Else, Kirsty Heard. Despite the fact that his number is listed alongside the business on multiple websites, and the number appears on several proton pack listings, AND listings for a fridge on Gumtree and a computer with instructions to ask for “Matt”. He has no explanation of how his number is on those sites, each refering to “Matt”.
Fun times. I may call the land line number that I have next, it was only listed on one site and has since been pulled, was also referenced in a classified ad for Disco equipment. Harder to get rid of a landline than a mobile number. We'll see.

Yeah, this whole experience really brought me right the hell down. It was supposed to be a birthday present, and wound up being a colossal pain in the ass. Not only did it result in fraud, stolen funds, and misrepresentation, but I also have been assured I'll never own a proton pack. Kind of sucks all around, actually.

I get that you're upset, but don't over-react and turn this into “I'll never own a pack”. There are plenty of reputable, trusted sellers out there that you can buy one from.
