Ghostbusters: The Other Side #3

Alright. Read Issue 3 over the weekend and I gotta say, I agree with Dr. Venkman. This is the worst of the 3 so far, and mainly that's because of the writing. The reader to two-pages ahead of the characters in the book, just by making logical connections with what's going on. The GBs themselves seemed dumbed down - slower to catch on to things. And yes, the dialogue is grating.

**Spoilers**
I'm all for IDW continuing a series. I'll support new GB endeavors. But please - get rid of Keith Champaign. They need to find someone who actually loves the characters and the series. Keith Champaign does not. In my opinion, he just doesn't have the feel of it. Yes, let's have Venkman decapitate another demon in another gorey scene. The “Blood rain” - really necessary? I'd rather they moved the story a long.
Also, “Mod Squad from God?” Ya know - I could get into having Eliot Ness bring down Al Capone again, but did J. Edgar Hoover really need to make a “pinko” joke on just about every page? Just like with the mobster language, he's taken what might have been funny and completely run it into the ground. I just felt that we didn't get anywhere in this issue.
Now, at this point, I've got my guess as to how the GBs come back: they help J. Edgar and Eliot Ness defeat the mobsters controlling the pipeline, and for such a good job done, God brings them back to life. (How else could they come back after being dumped in the river?) I've got my own issues with that idea, but I'll take those up if that's they way it turns out.

The Art: It's not Legion, but I can look over it. It would be alright if it stayed at this quality for the issues to come. The cover on this issue didn't do anything for me though. It was a piece of their promo art and has absolutely nothing to do with the story. Like was mentioned before - the most GB equipment you saw was on the cover. That's sad. And the style just seemed off. Most cover art is better than the interior. This wasn't.

Finally, I noticed the speech bubbles as well, and I think Gildir hit the nail on the head. It's that they're “not really dead.”

I think you have that backwards. (*peter) The cover art was definitely better than the interior art…

I agree with others that this is (by far) the worst of the 3 issues, which is why I haven't bothered commenting on it so far. It feels like they're writing for a 5th grade audience, seriously. I mean, already on the second page the demon actually says "I'm really freakin' hungry!“ What were they thinking? I simply can't buy the fact that a soul-devouring demon of the nether-world would use 21st century, middle-schooler lingo, even if it was a ”joke.“

And then there's the whole super-human Venkman thing, which just seems like a total cop-out to me. I could logically accept that Venkman, his body being still alive, and soul merely displaced, would be allowed to forego some of the disadvantages in purgatory. But to gain entirely new ”superpowers,“ alien to both worlds; it just seems like a bogus solution to an unnecessary, convoluted problem, on behalf of the writers. The Ghostbusters are supposed to solve problems with intellect (and luck), not fly around like superman, dismembering paranormal creatures with super-strength.

And then there was the whole thing with Winston running into his old flame. While I appreciate a bit of character development (especially with Winston), it just seemed a bit forced to me. And the way they handled it was too ”emo" I guess. And to have her conveniently wearing a bikini of all things, for their horny middle-schooler target audience… It's just totally farcical. Unclassy. Not my cup of tea.

I guess, to say one positive thing, I did really like the way Janine looked. That is, with the exception of her orange hair. They at least could've made it red-orange (heavy on the red), if not the classic fire-truck red we're used to. They should've put the orange hair on Ray. Aside from that small detail though, I think they did a great job with Janine. So enough of my griping….

I don't know. All the purportions seem off in the cover. Especially Winston and his pack. There was nothing special about it and it has nothing even remotely pointing to the story.

There I will agree with you. I like the way Janine looked. Though I still don't get (and maybe I'm just a little slow) what she was looking at on the outside of the Firehouse that upset her. The mess inside - sure, but while she was standing on the street, what tipped her off that the guys were awake (as she was thinking at the time)?

I can see what you mean about the packs looking a tad bit large, but beyond that, the cover art is far more accurate and detailed than the interior art (which is expected), so I don't really see what you mean. Even if it's irrelevant to the issue, relevance has nothing to do with the inherant integrity of the artwork. In the interior artwork, the uniforms just look like big baggy piles of khaki. The utility belts and elbow pads are all wrong…

Okay, Just finished reading this comic book not that long ago now. I found it to be alright, not awsome just alright. I've grown accustom to the interior art now and can go as far as even saying accepted it. Again like most fans have pointed out, the dialogue is indeed very lacking and leaves nothing much to the imagination. Im not meaning to rip on this comic series I just think it could have been written alot smoother with someone who was more intrested in the project. Not saying the current writer isn't intrested, just noticed how off key this comic book can be sometimes is all. Otherwise I felt the comic book is eventually coming along alright. It's just great to have a comic book series about the Ghostbusters again, And I hope that IDW takes on a monthly title. I enjoy reading something GB related in the comic media once again lol

I personally enjoy the series. It's no Legion Series, but it's definately a change of pace. It's written like a comedy (which is what the movies are…) apposed to the Legion series being much darker and serious (which I have absolutely no problem with btw, LOVED the series!). I try and imagine it as the 3rd GB movie (since it was kind of going to be like this) and keeping that thought in my mind brings a smile to my face and helps me appreciate the jokes more.

Interesting that you would see this as a comedy and Legion as being dark, when I think this one really went for the ‘dark’ thing from the word go, which is where it has stumbled.

i could quote you lines of Legion after a first read because they rang so true and made me laugh, I've got NOTHING from this one to give you at all. If it's funny then it's because it's laughably bad.

I really don't understand how this series is as lame as it is - even Marvel UK got the character deliniation, more or less, not to mention the funnies - ‘Spengler’s Spirit Guide' read like Woody Allen at times!

It's sweet that we all want to support to see where things go, but I really feel as though we're being a little robbed, even if it is just £2.50 a pop - 10 cigarettes down the tube, for a start.

So it may not be the best material, but at least its making you healthier!

Depends on how one looks at it. Since I like the series so far I don't feel like I'm being robbed at all.

Well, I'm not yet able to find this IDW series, and I don't smoke anyway, so where does that leave me?
