Ghostbusters: The Other Side #4

Well… I said I had high hopes, but certainly not high expectations for this issue given the first three… unfortunately, hopes were not well received with this issue. Here's my review:

Story: 6/10
The overall story had tremendous potential. Unfortunately, potential doesn't get you very far. The dialogue was still ridiculously obvious. The whole Winston's ex thing (see, I don't even remember her name) was just so overplayed and overly dramatic. It was trying too hard. And involving angels and God? Too much. That's not really a part of the GB universe, and it shouldn't be. The point of GB is to be grounded as much as possible in reality. Extremely disappointed in this series. Could have been so much better. They definitely need a new writer for any upcoming series/issues.

Art: 7/10
The art never really changed much throughout the series, and that's not horrible. I eventually got used to the new looks for the guys. They were close enough that you could tell who they were. It was a new take, and I can deal with that. No biggie. The only thing that bugged me, and maybe this is more story related, and maybe I just didn't notice it in any previous issues… was it really necessary to have Winston's drowned girlfriend walk around in a bikini with seaweed around her neck? Bikini… fine… maybe everyone stays in purgatory in whatever they die in… but the seaweed? Seriously? Come on.

Overall: 5/10 (series gets a 5.5/10)
Was hoping for a good ending… didn't get it… never really got much of anything that really felt like Ghostbusters or that felt like a good storyline. Its a shame. I even noticed that my comic shop definitely had lowered their order numbers, probably due to low sales. They still have copies of the previous 3 issues in stock.

I sincerely hope that Champagne won't be given another shot as a Ghostbusters writer. He just doesn't understand the characters or their personalities. A lot of people feared that due to his first interview… and a lot of people were right.

*I can officially say - “I told everybody so.” (*egon)…

*Cheers.

The dialogue and pace definitely needed fine tuning.
The whole theological aspect of it was irritating.

It just felt forced, overall.

First thought that came to mind after reading: “Dude…weak!” The best part about this comic book was the cover.

**Spoilers to follow**

Story: Horrible. What a sad ending to this. Keith Champaign never needs to touch GB property again. After issue 3, I had guess that “God” would give the GBs life again after they helped the “Mod Squad of God” defeat the gansters - which was a bad idea enough. But the execution was even worse. “We will not interfere in these affairs……except after you've done all the work we will randomly and without explanation bring you back to life with no scarring, water damage, etc.” Horrible. Also, the “jokes” and I will use the term very loosely weren't even remotely funny. Oh yes, let's joke that while Fred was sleeping with prostitutes in Venkman's body that he caught an STD! Seriously?

Art: Like Dr. V said, it hasn't changed much and I've kinda gotten used to it. However, now that we see the proton pack in action - I think more could have been done with the proton stream. It didn't look right - way too linear and the wrapping stream was too tight. Whatever. Even excellent art couldn't have saved this trash.

Overall: Very disappointed. I was able to pick this up at my comic shop here in Amarillo. This is the same comic shop that refuses to hold stuff for me. It's just that they've gone from completely selling out to just myself and one of the workers actually buying these. I hope the next mini-series can pull it out, but if it's like this, I don't see any hope for an on-going. And if it's written by Champaign, I doubt I would even buy it brand new. (Read it in the store and wait ‘til it goes on a 99cent back-issue special just to complete the collection)

Here’s hoping IDW has learned from its mistake and the next series will make up for this.

What bugged me most was how everything would start and stop to explain situations ad nauseum.

I mean, really? “I'm a demon! I'm going to disembowel Venkman! Now let me explain that for twelve minutes…”.

Less talk, more rock. OR have the right tone. The dialogue just never sounded right at all.

*My question is now - Are we expected to consider this “canon” as it was an officially licensed product, or do we file it in the same lack-luster category as the majority of the UK Marvel RGB stories?

*I say the latter…

*Cheers.

Absolutely the latter, without a doubt.

Each issue I hoped would get better. No such luck. Reminded me more of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey than anything else. Enjoyed the GB's becoming ghosts themselves and the covers, but little else. The previous 88 MPH book was much better overall…

You guys really should be posting these comments over at the IDW forums too. The editorial teams are over there a lot answering questions and the like. I spoke Chris Ryall (EIC at IDW) about pitching a story with an artist I work with on Tales of the TMNT, and he told that there is at least one other GB story in the pipeline, and that they're going to be reassessing things when June comes around as to whether or not it's worth holding on to the license. The good thing about the dudes over there is that they really do take notice of what the fans want. They just need to let people know (Transformers and GI Joe are both prime examples).
