Some forums do have a cleanup feature for people who don't post anymore/or have never posted a day in their life… but I don't know if GBN has one of those and how easy it'd be to use.

Not without a hack. The PhpBB2 software lets you prune forums and posts, but not users. The only way to prune users is to go through and delete them through the Administration Control Panel. Worse, without a hack, you can only prune those users one at a time. (Though I know a hack exists, the User List, that could allow you to delete users a page at a time)

Anyway, the long and short of it is, assuming more or less default settings, it's just not worth the time and effort.

Just be glad this forum doesn't have automatic word censors. I remember the Back to the future forum, which automatically censors the bad “words”. Some words I understand like the *f* word, but things like suck, crap? That's taking things a little too far, I mean they're not that bad.

There are a couple of forums I know which deletes the account if they haven't posted at least once a week.

2527 registered users but 2000 post and never come back after being treated like poop by old losers in here, which leaves 527 active users lol

You're forgetting the amount of people who just joined to spam the boards with porn ads. We had a hell of problem with that last year.

In fairness, it wasn't just this board–it's become a big problem for just about every PhpBB2 based board on the Internet.

GBHQ switched to PhpBB3 a month and a half back, and haven't had that problem since.

That's not only uncalled for but ignores the natural processes of people simply getting bored and loosing interest in the franchise (if brought in by the buzz from something like the comic), simply not having the time to devote to the community with a changing life or lifestyle, people moving out to a region where the Internet is less widely available or can't justify the price and then the person who was never heavily into it in the long run, as exhibitied by those who posted a few times but then decided to leave.

Something I once read said the average length for a person to be a regular member of a forum was around three to five years or so.

Anyway, unfortunately I don't know of any real way to get rid of all the unused accounts… but it's not as if a cleanup would improve the general operation of the board, as far as I'm aware.

I don't believe we've discussed enough the possibilities of evil junkfood, or by extension the potential evils to be beheld by demonically possessed street furniture.
