True… it was a thought, and Venkman mentioned it before Ray got to thinking….
a giant j. edgar hoover would've been just as bizarre. But I guess perhaps Ray had already deduced what Gozer had meant by the time Venkman explained it.

Plus, what wouldve been easier to pull off? a giant version of a fictional character exclusive to the movie (which means they have control over what it looks like) or a giant version of an actual person, that people know what he looked like? i mean, u couldnt have a guy in a j. edgar hoover costume and have it be as convincing as a guy in a stay puft suit

Honestly, that would have been rather hilarious if. Imagine now if that had happened reliving the battle with Gozer as J. Edgar Hoover in the videogame :-)

I've wondered this for awhile. I then came to the conclusion, in order for Gozer to choose its destructor form, someone has to actually confirm its form. I think while Peter brought up the Hoover thing, he didn't actually say or think anything along the lines of “yeah, we want the destructor in the form of Edgar J Hoover.” Ray, on the other hand, made it obvious that he actually wanted Stay Puft. Which made me to believe that somewhere up in his head he said something like “yes, stay puft, hes harmless, we choose him.”

The only explanation that makes sense from a story standpoint is that Venkman's idea for Hoover was a hypothetical situation whereas Ray flat-out made a conscious choice/decision for Stay-Puft and this is apparently a valid distinction according to Gozer's “rules”.

Like said above, Ray made a conscious choice as Venkman was talking to Gozer saying how clever he was and then told them to clear their mind. Well Ray didn't and focuses on Stay Puft, boom there you go, destructor form.
