You know how when a proton stream hits a ghost it raps around them and in traps them. That thought made me decide that Stay-Puff wasn't a ghost in GB. The reason why is instead of the beam raping around him they burn a hole in his chest, and he explods at the end!!!!

Gozer actually became what Ray imagined Mr. Stay Puft to be, a 100 foot man made entirely out of marshmallow, not ectoplasm. That's why the proton beams just seared his skin, and why marshmallow ended up everywhere when he exploded.
