Yes, but that would need to be a big proton pack. It wouldn't act anything like in the movies though. Do a search for “proton accelerator” or “linear accelerator” for some places.

Oh, and you probably aren't going to make it work. It would take a lot of scientists, and a lot of money, plus several acres of space.

Don't you just get fed up of people asking “Will my proton pack really work?”

I can hardly beleive that they would actually ask that kind of question.

Not to sound like an asshole or anything but….

Do you have a Q clearence? How about access to uranium or plutonium? How about a large amount of funding? Any experience in theoretical, nuclear, or linear physics? Its a good idea and all but really rapid nuclear acceleration is a little out of your reach, no offence. If you did ever ‘build’ one of these things what exactly would you do with it if you didnt die of radiation poisoning first? face

actually ecto-3 you are completely wrong, although you need a NUCLEAR power source, you do not need scientists, a very large fund, or much physics expreience. There was a post about this already, but there you will find out that it is quite easy to build the pack. There is also a web site that tells you how to do it.

I am not completely wrong…

Since you DO need a Nuclear Power source you NEED materials. Materials CIVILIANS CANNOT get ahold of. You just cant build this thing in your basement or your garage, this takes facilities, resources. If you were to spill/expose that material to the enviroment you would be in deep sh!t

Living in Oak Ridge will teach you a lot of this. History basically explains itself, radiation isnt just there, it will kill you.

If you dont feel like having experience in physics then atleast learn how to handle dangerous and Unstable material.

P.S.

There was a very large thread about this subject on ASAP wink

i can't believe that people are discussing the funtionality of a proton pack. geez, does the term, “it's only a movie” mean anything…

I suppose that you dont understand that lots of movies have contributed to great advances in science(s), you on the other hand, just dont know it. Robotics is one of the fields, although nuclear physics hasnt really been touched, just about anything in a fictionous movie is BASED off of a real object. The proton pack was just out of its time, a reactor its size isnt that far off. wink

Borzou's right.

Guys, seriously, I'd like a lightsaber, proton pack and delorean time machine as well, but get real.

Look, even if this stuff wasn't “far off,” I highly doubt someone would be able to post in the props how to make a real one. That's because the cost would be enormous, and the materials needed would be things you just don't pick up at your local gas station.

And would you really want one? Would you like to go around and study and chase ghosts? Would you want to devote your life to it?

And how have movies greatly contributed to science over the years. Can you at least give some examples?

Actually it's 180 degrees from that. Science has contributed to movies over the years. All proper sci-fi is only proper if there is an element that is well-researched and somewhat believable. Otherwise it's just a fantasy.

This sort of thing is not real. It is just a movie.

Make the props, that's great, but don't get too caught up in it. Not to this point anyway.
