Yes indeedy, they did get wet (IIRC). I believe there's an explanation on the DVD commentary - I'll find out tomorrow.

Yeah Ectoman's right. They explain it in “Making Ghostbusters”.
The effects guys used water mist to simulate smoke and debris, that's why as the scene goes on the guys look more and more damp.
I remember an anecdote from the MG book that the wardrobe department were pissed off when Egon's suit got soaked with water because they didn't have a spare suit.

I always thought that it was sweat from the guys running, and the fact they had no clue what the result of shutting down the containment unit would be.

I lasways thought it was sweat, I mean, they just ran out of the fire house as the basement blew up. Blow up is kinda hot. Then wehn I was older I relized that EVERYBODY was wet, not just the people from in the building.
