Its certainly canon to the movies in my opinion, and acts like a 3rd story in the series.

I would stop short of calling it Ghostbusters III, since that movie is still a possibility.

I know for a while Dan was saying that the video game was GB3 - especially back before a third movie was really looking possible. I agree with Dr. V that it should be considered canon with the movies, but like he mentioned - I would stick to calling it GB:TVG because I'm sure the next actual movie (IF said movie gets made) would still be called GB3.

Right, although if it gets made I will always think of the third film as the fourth film. And TVG will be on my DVD shelf between that and GB2.

Well, that's one way of looking at it, but since its a video game, and not a film, I don't consider it to be a third film. The third film will be the third film, lol.

Its a video game, that continues the Ghostbusters story… its not a movie. So I haven't put it on my DVD shelf. To each their own though.

Not to mention it would be really sexy if and when the third movie gets made that they tossed out small references to the events of the game…you know…to concrete it's placement in the mythos.

^^ Yeah, I've been wondering about that.

They took the Gozer story and the slime river from GB2 and used it with the Shador story…. which was interesting as it suggests that Vigo was actually a result of the river of slime, and not the cause. The cause was the Slor… boss from Lost Island.

That's why I consider it to be canon and enough material to be considered a movie, but still NOT a movie.

I mean Aykroyd stated that the game basically is the third movie, and so I would think that at least the story is good enough expand on the existing plot. It does a good job of explaining the connection between Shandor and Vigo, which definitely helps as was mentioned that he was a by-product and not necessarily a stand-alone ghost with no backstory.

I consider the story to fill in the gaps between the two movies, and I think it would have made a great movie if done in live action back when it was supposed to happen. However, I'm just happy to have it as part of the GB storyline, and as a nerd of the series I love how it fits and how you can tell there was some serious thought put into it.

There were much needed explanations that garnered attention in the game, the big ones being Eleanor Twitty, Vigo and the river of slime, The Shandor background (i.e. Explaining the cult in more detail), and a more concise reasoning for why ghosts were there in New York in the first place.
