I have now seen all 22 pencilled pages for GHOSTBUSTERS #1. They are f*cking amazing.
I don't say that lightly. Believe me if I didn't like them I'd say so–well, okay, I wouldn't say so. I wouldn't say much of anything. But I do like them. In fact, I can't stop smiling I like them so much.
Coming off GI JOE and MICRONAUTS I knew Steve could handle the action parts of the script–the busting–my concern was he wouldn't draw the characters “acting” as well as the script required.
An aside: When I say “acting” I mean things like facial expressions, side-long glances, etc… Basically the characters reacting to the dialogue. A lot of artists in comics right now aren't great at this, they either only draw 3 faces (happy, sad and angry) or they make every eyebrow arch so exaggerated it undermines the dialogue (my dialogue! my precious dialogue!!…sorry).
Back. “Acting” is especially important in a book like Ghostbusters where there are dialogue heavy scenes and, often, characters speak ironically. So, since it is so important, and since doing it well is such a rare skill, I was a bit nervous.
Turns out I had no reason to be. The pages came out great, and once they're inked and colored they should be even better.
GHOSTBUSTERS is quickly going from a book I think people will enjoy, to one I think will get them talking (which very few comics do anymore).
And that makes me smile even more.
