It was likely inspired by the RGB pilot animation, which had Ray sat atop Ecto-1.

Also seem to remember art used for some of the merchandise at the time that also appeared on the board game that had (I believe) Peter sitting on top of the Ecto-1. But like Kingpin said, it is probably all originating from the same location: the pilot
