On September 11th, 2001, the world changed forever. No longer did I feel the comfort of a safe country, a safe home. Nothing mattered any more except for the strength, support, and love of friends. And that is what the Lord of the Rings is about. It is a story of the human spirit told through the struggle to ward off a foe unseen. It has very deep values and morals throughout, with very powerful messages. The message that even using a dark power with good intentions, that power can and will corrupt. This is also the story of friendship, faithfulness, and forgiveness. In the bonds between the characters, and the struggles of the characters, they ask each others forgiveness, and apologize to one another when they fail. This film spoke volumes to me with many underlying themes such as those.

Beyond that, the experience of the film was such that I have never seen before. What I saw wasn't perfect, but the flaws are forgivable. The length isn't a problem, because they were able to capture more of the book and I'm thankful for that. For a long time I wondered how audiences felt seeing the original Star Wars and changing the world of film, as I was born the year that the Empire Struck Back, and I believe that I have just witnessed just such an event, and felt those emotions. This picture had an effect on me and I loved the whole thing.

I've always found Gollum to be an interesting character. And so I don't ruin this for those who haven't seen the movie yet, I'll keep this vague: I was surprised and shocked concerning the unusual plot twist involving Gandalf. On the other hand, I didn't read the book, and if I did then I probably would've been prepared for that.

Incredible movie.

Kinda sucks that we have to wait a couple years for the sequel to come out…

But you know what they say about the moment of anticipation.

Okay, I don't know exactly what it is, but anticipation is good, basically.

Specter,

You made alot of assumptions about the movie. Do you know anything about tolkien? If you look at his life, much of his family died when he was little. As his life went on, most of his friends died in WWII. There is no deep meaning in the books. Nothing represents something else. But the book is largly influenced by his life experiences. The greater part of the book has to do with death. The mortal creatures in it's existence seek imortal life and those that are imortal only look forward to death. no offence, but I hate it when people try to find meaning in things where there is none.

Actually, I know a LOT about J.R.R. Tolkien.

He was a “Stauch” Catholic. A Stickler for the faith, and he said that he wrote “Lord of the Rings” to write an epic that would be fun, but he could not keep symbolism out of it.

How Gandalf explains that it was Pity that stayed Bilbo's hand for choosing NOT to kill Gollum, and who are we to make the choice to kill someone even if they deserve death. That message rings loudly during this war. Many people get many different things out of the books/movies, and much of it was uninteded, however unintended it might be, if it is something good, then so be it. Tolkien was also one of the reasons that C.S. Lewis became a Christian.

I've read biographies of Tolkien, and even some of the letters of Tolkien. In one case, he got a letter from a REAL Sam Gamgee. I'm no fool when it comes to Tolkien.
