Not to defend Richards, but I think people are kind of over-reacting, and jumping to conclusions here (like in Mel Gibson's case). Watching the video, it seems more like a case of a bad stand-up routine gone worse. Its like he was trying to be all controversial, and politically incorrect, and ‘shocking’, but then he got pissed off at a couple people, and it went totally overboard and he fumbled big time. He was trying to articulate real anger by using cheap, over-the-top tactics (the “N” word), AND trying to maintain his big ego in front of his audience. It's was just a bad situation, he mis-handled himself in the heat of a moment, lost his mojo, and everything backfired. That's my take. That's not to say he isn't a bigot mind you, but people have to seperate performance art from reality. In stand-up especially people tread a VERY fine line, and it's really easy to confuse/misinterperet things. Maybe he's a racist, maybe not. The point is, you can't make a conclusion based solely on this.
Also, I find it funny that people get their panties in a twist about this, when talentless hacks like Carlos Mencia make far worse remarks about ethnic/social groups on a regular basis on television shows which should have been cancelled two seasons ago. …Whatever though. I don't think Mencia is racist either. Just another tool… I think if the media is going to emotionally rape and defile a person for a “bigoted” comment, they should do it to someone who actually deserves it.
