My old comic idea...

Sometime ago I had an idea for a comic series that was more set in the style and feel of the ghostbusters movies. I felt what we were getting out of the GB comicverse was not up to par and I wanted to do something a little more dark and alot more gritty. Well what I came up with was more of a free fan oriented online comic where big fans of the franchise with knowledge of the characters and their equipment could write and submit ideas for scripts that I could illustrate. The comics were to take place between GB & GB2 and were mainly oneshot storys about the ghostbusters on location during a bust. I am a huge fan myself (ever since I was 5 and I am 28 now) and I fell more for the mythology behind their story and never felt the need to learn every technical aspect there was to know about how things worked behind their business. Well I guess what I'm getting at is that I never went through with the idea because I am aware of all the fans out there that study every inconsistancy something new with the GB name attached to it might have and will eat you alive for ruining their favorite franchise since childhood for doing so. I respect GB alot myself and realized that I didnt know enough about their equipment to draw it exactly how it should be so I decided to scrap the project.

I came across 2 very unpolished comic pages I made and thought I would post them anyway just to give the idea the chance it never got:

I understand the fact that some of us can off as over protected on the franchise lol, but that and what ever other problems shouldn't stop you from bringing your own creativity to the Ghostbusters lol. I'd say go ahead and do it. People are either going to like or dis-like your comics and plot you have in mind for it. Nothing wrong with sitting down and drawing something you enjoy no matter how detailed it is or isn't . Just have fun with it haha. So far from what I saw of your unpublished pages I like them. Your style of drawing is very intresting and I find it refreshing. Keep up the good work!

I'd personally say go ahead and just do it, people are either going to like or dis-like your comics and plot you have in mind for it. Your style of drawing is very unique and I find it refreshing. Besides if you look at the artists that drew the characters and their equipment throughout the years, you'll find they draw it as they see fit and to their best qualification. Keep that in mind when you draw anything though, keep up the awsome work!

I personally wouldn't worry too much about the inconsistencies or whatever. If something doesn't gel with the overall agreed-upon “canon” (a word I use very loosely) then it can be an Elseworlds-style thing.

Just remember the wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “A foolish inconsistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.”

I think you are trying to make it “gritty” by giving them beards and making them frown constantly, which i dont like, but idk its just one page, you should keep writing and we'll see how it pans out.

An “elsewhere” style might be the way to go, I enjoyed the character dynamic of the group (particularly the Real GB series), not so much the aspect of the equipment which is way I tried the alternative universe of GB with super powers and applying to their own personalities. Think of how it might be if the comic artist of Capt. Steel did place the GBs in his superhero comic or how Marvel made the alt. Ultimate Universe. My style borrows aspect of manga, cartoon, and comic book influences from over the years and felt that while GB started the creative process, the idea turned into a whole new entity.

By all mean go for it, allow no one to discourage you.

I tend to agree with this…

The art is good, don't get me wrong. But it seems like you're trying to make it gritty, and that results in the characters not really resembling their on-screen counterparts at all. That, and this scene reminds me of them huddled up on top of 55 Central Park West. Having stories of the scope where they're always fighting a life and death battle doesn't really flow that well, as we've seen through the montages, that the majority of the ghosts they bust aren't life threatening.
