Well, they had said that they could raise or lower the price. I'm honestly not surprised that it went up to about what its retail is (and should be).

The individual volumes are $25 each… there's 5 of them… where are you getting “buy all of them for $60” from?

Vol.1 was $22 at Amazon. So it's $66 for the 3 decent volumes.

Still nearly $100 less than the full set. I don't want to spend that much for episodes I didn't like in the first place, extras be damned.

I'm also curious as to why you think the set should be $160 rather than $125. It's common for websites like Amazon to reduce the price from the RRP significantly across all items. In a recession I'd argue that not many people, even fans, are willing do spend approaching $200 on a luxury item based on nostalgia and completism. Whilst they've done an amazing job of remastering, packing and providing extras (though the episode introductions are useless in my personal opinion) I don't think the set should retail for that much. If that means they release a more basic complete version (plastic cases, cheaper box) or, better yet, continue to release the individual volumes, then I would expect them to shift more than simply re-releasing the same product at the same price. I suspect they've done this to maximise the tie-in to the game and 25th Anniversary, but hopefully the price will drop over time.

I couldn't afford the set initially but was tempted, then when I saw Vol. 1 released I snapped it up expecting the rest to follow but 6 months later there has been no news. (*egon)

I see… you didn't imply before that you were only going to buy 3 of the 5 sets, instead of trying to have the complete set.

I think that the high quality of the set justifies the high quality price. I'm not saying I wouldn't like it to cost less, but I think the price is in line with what you're getting for your money.

To put it into perspective, there are 147 episodes, plus extras on these discs… so you're paying approximately $1 per episode/extra. The individual volumes cost anywhere from $23-30, and include 30 episodes… So lower prices are slightly less than $1 per episode, or close to it, but you don't get the extras. Its really not that different in price. The extra money paid for getting the whole set is for the extras (which are fantastic) and the packaging. You make it out to be that the set will only cost $66 in individual volumes, but that's just for you. If someone wants the whole set, they'll be paying somewhere around $120-130 pretty much, and won't get the extras or packaging. To me, its worth the extra money for it.

And to counter the recession statement, I'd argue that plenty of people are spending plenty of money on nostalgia considering the sales of the Ghostbusters figures and video games and other merchandise recently. Yes, there's a recession. But it doesn't seem to be scaring people away from spending money on something they love and are nostalgic for.

With a coupon code, I only paid $158 including shipping through Time-Life last year. Had I known it was eventually coming to retail as a complete set, I would have waited. I got a damaged Firehouse box. After a dozen phone calls and 6 months, I finally got a replacement. I am waiting for the G.I. Joe and Transformers complete sets to hit retail, so I can get a cheaper price and pick out my own set.

Just a quick heads up - I checked Amazon again and the full set is back down to $125.99 so I snapped it up.

For British fans, that converts to £75 for the full set. Individually the first three volumes would cost £55-60 so I've come round Doctor Venkman's thinking that this is a good deal, plus I guess I'll get round to watching Vol 4 & 5 as a bonus.

I just hope I don't get slapped with a hefty customs charge! (*ray)

I would love to get the entire series on DVD, but right now I couldn't afford it. If I found it at HMV or BestBuy etc in only volumes, I might buy it. But I would rather buy the entire season. But 125 is a bit much, and I really don't want to put that on my MC right now.

A wise choice, Ninth Muse. Me, I'm waiting until I can get my checking account sufficiently replenished and then I'll go for it.

However, I feel that the lower price deserves a commercial. Let's try it:

INT. DANA'S APARTMENT–KITCHEN

(PETER is waving the Ghost Sniffer around like a madman. Suddenly he stops at the fridge.)

DANA: That's where it happened, Dr. Venkman…inside the fridge.

(He opens it a crack.)

PETER: Oh my god…

DANA: What? What is it?

(PETER opens the fridge all the way. Inside, it is completely empty, save for a large stack of money with a pair of “googly eyes” on top, looking right at them from the topmost shelf.)

DANA: What *is* that thing?

PETER: That is the money you could have saved by waiting until September 29th, when The Real Ghostbusters 25-disc set comes out in stores.

DANA: Damn, I knew I shouldn't have jumped to order it in February…
