I received confirmation from a Hotwheels distributor the other day saying the Ecto-1 is going to be released as a Hotwheels Elite true 1:18 model in the second quarter of 2011. Catalog number is hwmvw1176 and the retail price will be around €80 which roughly equals £70 or $100.

As far as I know the Hotwheels Elite series is global. They're also releasing an A-team van at the same time. Nice to see they're going to do more movie cars. The batmobile series is probably a succes.

I know there have been rumors before and the plans to release it were genuine but there were problems because license fees were considered too high. Now Hotwheels has bought the rights to release it and the info I've received is straight from someone dealing with Hotwheels. But you're right; seeing is believing

That's just a calculation using the recent exchange rates. Usually retail US prices in dollars are equal to European retail prices in Euros so I expect it to be $79 or so. That's the same price as the Batmobile Elite model so not really surprising.
Oh and remember it's not going to be just a rerun of the Joyride Ertl model but a new TRUE 1:18 model. Looking at the 1966 Batmobile Elite I expect the new Ecto to be more detailed than the 2004 model.

Awesome news! It makes perfect sense, really. The Ecto-1 is easily one of the most, if not THE most, iconic and recognizable elements from the films. Plenty of GB figures of all sorts have been put out over the past couple years, but a nice Ecto-1 to go alongside them has been strangely absent. As for the price, I'd pay as much as $100 in a heartbeat for a really nice 1:18 Ecto-1; I might even be willing to pay double that if it included working headlights, roof-rack lights and the siren.

Well, consider that Hotwheels is a Mattel brand, and if Mattel already has the rights to produce GB stuff, then it follows that a 1:18-scale ECTO-1 isn't too big a stretch. That, and, if they've already done the ‘66 and ’89 Batmobiles, then the GB car shouldn't be very far off the radar.
