New Book From....TokyoPop?

I just finished reading it last night. Before this, I hadn't even picked up a Manga book and was surprised to find it in black and white. But as several others here have said: It was Ghostbusters. So sure, why not?

Art: I got used to the art after a bit. It's not dead-on, but that's alright. I thought it was a little hard to follow at times where there was action and no words - specificially when Winston is running around with the machine gun and proton pack, before finding the others.

Story: The first story screamed RGB - and the kid pop-up book RGB at that. The let's have a story about Ghostbusters and not have them bust the ghost RGB. Eh. The middle arc I found interesting. It was involving and can be seen as a continuation from GBII. I thought the last story was better than the first. Yeah the guys in drag may have been a little much.

Writing: I think this is what I enjoyed most about the whole thing. The jokes actually made me laugh. (Venkman: “Gives you an idea of the women I date.” - or something to that effect, the book isn't in front of me at the moment, or at the end of the main arc “you realize, of course, we're not getting paid for any of this.”) It was the character here that “The Other Side” was lacking. Sharp wit in a must in GB property. This had it.

Overall I thought it was a great read. Definately worth the 13 bucks. If they make any more, I'll get my order in. And they left it open at the end for more books to follow, with Hardemeyer in the soup kitchen line and the tag that it wouldn't be the end.

I really can't get enough of this one!

"I think they're trying to say it was better than Cats"!

Brilliant.

I'm about half way through… I'm really liking this Nathan Johnson guy who wrote a lot of the stories. He seems to have the characters down pretty well. I'm especially liking the hung-over Peter dialog so far. Really, really liking this.

Out of curiosity, knowing that we have no official word on either this or the IDW comic, when would another Manga book normally become available?

King's mentioned in other topics that comics, like the IDW 4-part, normally come out at 1 a month and I have seen that comic book schedule. But being brand new to Manga, I've got no idea what “standard” or “typical”.

I've had limited experience with manga, but with collecting Hellsing, I've found the time between releases to be significantly longer (partly due to the larger pagecount of a manga)… I think, three months maxinmum?

That's a very rough guess.

Of course it depends if they plan to do another or not.

Cool. I just appreciate the general information. I figured it would be longer, but really had no idea.

I like the first story arc. The second one got a little out there.

The art varies. None of it is bad, I just like some more than others.

But it was a fun read. That counts for something in the long run.

Plus of course a book like Ghostbusters takes a lot more work on TokyoPop's end: most manga are English adaptations of material that already exists, having been previously published in Japan. They have to translate, rescript, and reletter the dialog and sound effects, but the story and art is done.

A totally in-house work like Ghostbusters: Ghost Busted requires them to also do the work of writing and drawing the material, which they don't have to do with “real” manga. (Many would say that technically, not having been written and drawn in Japan, Ghost Busted isn't manga, but is instead a manga-influenced American comic. When it comes to semantics, your mileage may vary)
