Sony has recruited Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg “The Office” writer-producers to work on a new installment of the 1980s franchise that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis as bumbling ghost-hunting scientists.
The original filmmakers, including director Ivan Reitman, and cast are aware of the project and involved in its development. Some original cast members might be involved, but the focus will be on a new cast of Ghostbusters.
“Ghostbusters” was Sony's top-grossing film ever until “Men in Black” and then all three “Spider-Man” films beat it out. The 1984 film grossed $292 million worldwide, and its 1989 sequel brought in another $215 million globally.
First Dan Aykroyd leaked news of a possible Ghostbusters 3 while promoting his Wine in Toronto. Then the trades announced that The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were attached to write the screenplay. Now, Harold Ramis has come forward to confirm that the sequel is definitely moving ahead with Judd Apatow and Bill Murray possibly involved.
Ramis himself sent an email to Mark Caro's Pop Machine Blog at The Chicago Tribune explaining the matter at hand:
“Yes, Columbia Pictures is developing a script for Ghostbusters 3 with my year one writing partners, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. Judd Apatow is co-producing Year One and has made several other films for Sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman and I are consulting at this point, and according to Dan, Bill Murray is willing to be involved on some level. He did record his dialogue for the new Ghostbusters video game, as did Danny and I, and Ernie Hudson. The concept is that the old Ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. Not much else to say at this point. Everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there. Best, Harold.”
So, there you go folks. If all goes well, we can look forward to seeing Ghostbusters 3 in 2010.

I merely made a promise and oath to myself that if GB3 ever got made, I'd hightail it to LA and get on set to help. Course, I never thought they'd actually DO it. Sigh, my wife is gonna kill me…
