This is what i don't understand. I really don't. Everytime somebody seems to have smoothed things over, someone jumps up and makes a sensationalist claim. Usually using some form of hyperbole to emhpasise their point.
We are all aware that there is an issue regarding the hardcover.
We are all aware that Seb has screwed up.
But why do people have to make the assumption that the problem is of malicious intent? I think the fact that he announced his departure shows more (not much, but a little) honour than if he'd just gone. I think it's a sign that he isn't gone for good.
Evenflow, yes principle is important. Very important. I agree. But so is perspective. I have never once said “It's only $35”. However, the fact that it IS $35, whilst it doesnt excuse the situation, does mean that you or anybody else will be losing the roof over their home any time soon.
What worries me is that people constantly keep saying “Fraud” and “Illegal” and that 88mph is “getting away with it”. There really is no evidence of this. We are just sensationalising the issue.
I beg you all to look at what has happened here objectively, please.
Sebastian Clavet has made some previous financial mistakes. Bad ones yes. He thinks his new project, a Ghostbusters comic book will be fine. At first it is. Then there are delays, indicating that there are fincancial problem back in the days of the indiviudal comics. The HUGE amount of variant covers produced suggests that Seb needs to get as much money as possible for whatever reason.
He then tries to publish the hardcover. For somereason however, the money he collected from this project has had to go towards his last cock up, regardless of the Titan book, he is left with not enough money to print the Hardcover.
Things are getting rather bad. He has lost the money people paid him to get the book out. I expect he's rather terrified. He has licencing fees to pay, and he infact has lots of customers yellling at him. On top of this, the artist who coloured “The Zeddemore Factor” has also not been paid.
Seb is in a difficult situation. Either he needs to refund everyone…. which he hasnt the money for. Or he needs to get the book published… which he hasnt the money for. All the while he's getting abuse from customers. Possibly not unfounded, but still, rather distressing. He knows he needs to get money. He knows that anything he says will merely inspire more attacks. So he goes offline for a bit on his first actual break. If he was disapearing with our money he wouldnt have said “im going” he'd have just split. For all we know he's going south to ask a relative for financial aid. Maybe he's selling his house and getting a smaller property to fund the book. Either way. We don't know. But there is no cause to jump to the idea of Fraud.
fraud
n.
A deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain.
A piece of trickery; a trick.
One that defrauds; a cheat.
One who assumes a false pose; an impostor.
So far, we cannot prove that Sebastian has met any of those criteria for fraud. I might be British, but as far as I'm aware, “Innocent unilt proven Guilty” is part of the American Way is it not?
I really don't think you should stop being angry. Not at all. We've all been left hanging. Sebastian DOES deserve anger. And he needs to face up to his mistakes. But getting hostile really won't help. And there is certainly no cause to jump to the idea of criminal act.
