Problems Signing Up on GBHQ?

I hope Ben, Iain, and the other Mods bear with me here…

Like this site, GBHQ has had problems with Spambots signing up and trying to post. To eliminate this problem, Netsolo and I've set the board to not allow new users to post until they've been approved by an Administrator (usually me)

I know that more than one person who's signed up for this board has signed up there too; I'm afraid the spambots have gotten so sneaky that a “zero tolerance” policy on singups that look suspicious have ended up with more than one deletion that, I discover later, was an actual user.

Despite what certain individuals say and think, GBHQ does welcome new users; we just ask that you give us enough information to determine whether you're a real person or another frickin'g spambot. To whit, our guidelines for new sign-ups:

http://www.ghostbustershq.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3997

1. Don't have an email address ending in .info or .ru

2. Fill out your profile as completely as possible. Spambots don't do this very often, and when they do it's pretty obvious. Listing “Ghostbusters” in your interests line will definitely help.

3. Have a signature line that's something more than just a repeat of your Interests or Occupation. That's a big tip-off. Or a link to a boner pill web site–another big red flag. A quite from one of the movies will definitely help your chances–you don't need to keep it once your account is activated.

Or, hell, just put in your signature line “I saw Fritz's post on GBN and I certify I'm not a spambot.” Signatures and interests can easily be changed once the account is activated.

I apologize to anyone who's signed up with only a name and email address, and thus had your account deleted; please follow the rules above, and your account should be activated with no problem within twenty-four hours (usually less)

Watch this thread on GBHQ, where I report new account activations:
