Question about ghost effects

I'm not sure where's the best place to post this topic, but I need some help regarding some ghost effects for a fan movie.
I recall having heard once that there's a trick you can do with mirrors to create a semi-transparent image of someone. It was used in old plays and such I think but I don't remember exactly how this is done.

Pepper's Ghost.

Still a very commonly-used trick today, especially in the Disney Parks on rides such as the Haunted Mansion and the Tower of Terror:

Probably a bit too impractical. An alternate concept is to use a technique like the old double exposure effect that was used by unscrupulous victorian photographers, where you'd film one plate of a location, and then film another with the person on it and then make the one with the person slightly transparent, but it'd need a controlled environment, such as a controlled camera movement to film both sequences at the same speed if it's a panning shot… and you'd have to be wary of things like trees swaying in the wind.

Thanks Kingpin and yeah, I have also thought of the double-exposure method, but am unsure if this method is possible to do with a digital camera. Maybe there's some video editing programs who provide the tools for such things.
Any good tips for creating proton beams are also welcome.

There's a few tutorials for the particle beams, but I haven't tried them myself so I'm unsure of how well the end result is.

If you have access to Premier, or After Effects then you can use them to do a double exposure…
