So what was the point of the deleted scene where the 2 homeless people are talking (one of which is Bill Murray) and then Louis runs by them. I can't figure out why they would even film this scene.

You're not the only one.

Possible it was filmed to add some more humor to the film, but it just wasn't going to work as it was obviously Murray and Aykroyd dressed up as the hobos (and it was that very fact that led to the idea being scrapped from the movie).

In the novel, the bums were named Harlan Bojay and Robert Learned Coombs. Does anyone know which was Aykroyd and which was Murray?

It's obvious that the one talking about (pardon me if I misspell) Nicaragua is obviously Bill Murray. I didn't know the other one was Dan. Oh. You mean their names. I don't know which one's which.

Well here is what Ghostbusters Wikia has so far…

Far from complete, but it has pictures.

I remember the first time, I watched this clip on the 1999 edition of the DVD. I am really glad that it was cut out of the film, it would have likely confused some viewers seeing Murray and Aykroyd dressed like homeless people when we know that their jobs keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Also the pacing of the film over all works better with Louis Tulley running to Tavern on The Green, after climbing over the wall to escape the terror dog.
