Ranking System

I saw message boards that have a ranking system for each forum member. I was thinking that maybe this message board could try it. I think a ranking system could help prevent users from being bad and encourage users to be more helpful and nice to each other.

I was thinking a row of about ten little stars under each member’s avatar picture and each time that member creates something neat or helps someone out they get a gold star. If a forum member is treating other members bad or swearing at people they get a red star. If a user gets up to ten red stars they can be banded.

This way forum members will be able to know who’s bad and who’s good and also creates a way to know when a member qualifies for being banded.

Just an idea, not that it needs to be exactly like that.

It's been discussed many times before, and I believe Chad has always wanted to keep each member on the same level. It could create more problems than it does good.

Well maybe there could be only red stars for those who are bad and everyone else is left blank. There are not many people on this site that are bad but for the ones that are they should be marked and if they get enough marks they get banded.

A system like that would be open to abuse though… If two people were having a dispute and one took it really personally he could abuse it by upping the red stars unfairly.

It would require either a major hack or the direct participation of an Administrator to make that work. And with the number of combinations of stars would literally number in the hundreds at least, which due to the configuration of PhpBB would, again, require a hack or a different rank icon in the file system for every possible combination.

In other words, I don't think it's really feasible from the practicality standpoint.

Now, I think PhpBB2 does have Karma hacks available, but as Kingpin said, that would probably lend itself to abuse quite easily. I know it did on one non-GB board I used to frequent a few years back.

Yeah we've had problems in the past with people spamming one word posts “cool!” “LOL” etc trying to get to a higher rank in a hurry. Most people won't abuse or care about the title but there are those people that think it matters. (*egon)

also what Fritz said. :p

Yea, let's just all stay on the same level. No worries then.

This message board has tried a ranking system before? I was thinking about not giving people higher ranks by just posting messages rather for being creative and making something neat or helping out people.

But if this message board has tried it in the past and failed at having a ranking system then yeah I could understand why you’re all against it.

That definetly sounds more cool and similar to other forums I've seen. It was on the old Ghostbusters.net. Needless to say some people didn't want to stay “Filmation Ghostbuster” or “Junior Ghostbuster” for very long. :-)

That's really all it was. Based on posts. I think FGB, JGB, EGB, GB, RGB and maybe Senior Ghostbuster? I can't really remember very well.

For some people, this can be considered like a ranking sytem

It's funny that nobody tried to play with this.
