Writer/director/producer John Hughes died suddenly today of a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to Manhattan to visit family. He was 59.

Hughes directed the films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, Uncle Buck and Curly Sue.

Hughes also wrote and produced many films, such as National Lampoon's Vacation, Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, Dutch and The Great Outdoors. You can view a full list of his films here.

Born on February 18th, 1950 in Michigan, Hughes in the last decade stepped back from the legacy he created to enjoy time with his family, maintain a functioning farm in northern Illinois and support independent arts.

Hughes is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy, two sons, John and James, and four grandchildren.

When growing up I saw his films hundreds of times, Weird Science, Ferris Buellers Day Off, The Breakfast Club are my top 3 fave films he did, but the rest are classics as well.

He wrote the following classics as well:-

Class Reunion (1982)
Mr. Mom (1983)
Vacation (1983)
Sixteen Candles (1984)
The Breakfast Club (1985)
European Vacation (1985)
Weird Science (1985)
Pretty in Pink (1986)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
The Great Outdoors (1988)
Uncle Buck (1989)
Christmas Vacation (1989)
Home Alone (1990)
Career Opportunities (1991)

Seen all the above, after Career Opportunities (or One Wild Night as it was called in the UK) he started to do a load of childrens films.

I was reading yesterday that he left Hollywood behind as he blamed it for killing his friend John Candy, he said Hollywood was a bad influence and he did not want it around his children.

Here is a great story about the man from a close fan :- http://wellknowwhenwegetthere.blogspot.com/2009/08/sincerely-john-hughes.html

At Cross the Streams radio, we would like to convey our condolences to the family and show our deep appreciation of the films and stories by the late and great : John Hughes. John passed away yesterday due to heart failure in Manhattan. As other sites maybe paying tribute to the great filmmaker, we understand that Hughes’ work doesn’t really have anything to do with Ghostbusters, however he did work with three Ghostbusters characters in the 80’s: Dan Aykroyd (The Great Outdoors) Harold Ramis (National Lampoon’s Vacation), and Annie Potts (Pretty in Pink) .

Since we are children of the 80’s, it’s very hard for us not to recognize the films of John Hughes as they were clearly an inspiration for us during our youth. Not only is Ghostbusters one of our favorite films all time, but also a full list of Hughes films: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Uncle Buck, The Breakfast Club, and (Matt’s favorite ‘Anthony Michael Hall film) Weird Science.

It’s amazing that many of the great films/comedies of the 80’s really came from the work of one man and for that, we salute him! See you on the other side John, and thanks to your stories you have proved to us that ‘geeks’ CAN get the hot girl in the end. (See above referenced films)

Yours truly,

Matt and Brendan
