The name ‘Slimer’ is cannon the video game suggests this the video game is a story in the universe that is cannon. In the game at the start when he escapes they refer to him as Slimer "Oh no Slimer got away again!" If you don't believe the game is cannon read any interview with Ivan and Dan about the game they have been saying ever since they started making the game that the game is in fact Ghostbusters 3

Well, yea… he was saying that if you only watch the first movie the name “Slimer” isn't canon.

I hadn't thought of the video games, and also, he appears in the credits of Ghostbusters II as “Slimer”, so yea, after the first movie, he definitely becomes “Slimer”… But simply in the first movie alone he doesn't have a name.

Before RGB, Slimer was not “cannon”, he was actually known as onion head.

they should really start teching this stuff in schools :-(

Like I said i know it's cannon it just could be true. Like you said “Most of the original staff knows about the 12th floor… the disturbances I mean… but its been quite for years, up until 2 weeks ago” Who's to say a) Slimer is the first ghost there? and b) Slimer could have been there when he was first a ghost say 3 years ago then went meaning it was quiet for years.

After all in ghostbusters 2 he's seen in different areas so he's not tied to the hotel. So It's believable that either of those works. Now again I know it's not cannon but I like the idea of him been a new ghost.

In the new game you learn there is something else on the 12th floor, and the manager says that the original staff know about it, which is odd since the hotel was built in the twenties I believe, how would he know what the original staff did or didn't know 60 years after the fact?
