Slimer in "The Real Ghostbusters"

I've been watching the first season and I was wondering if anyone else has thought about who Slimer was? I know it's only a cartoon, but imagine if Slimer was your dead grandfather or distant relative being treated like a dog. Of course, Slimer does like the set up. He is seemingly the spirit of gluttonous person trapped between this world and the next. Seems like they should help him crossover, if they really cared bout his wellbeing. Although, I guess if they tried helping each trapped spirit sort things out, the show would become too sappy.

One piece of litterature… I'd like to say the RPG but I know Fritz can correct me on this if I'm wrong, is that Slimer was a by-product of cult rituals in the Sedgewick basement.

A less than official alternate explanation, which I'm all in favor of vetoing, and even striking from existance… is that Slimer is the ghost of a gluttonous King named “Remils”.

Slimer is actually the Ghost of John Belushi.

Slimer is actually the Ghost of John Belushi.

That's a joke, its not serious.

Dan Aykroyd made that joke, and its been stated that since the ghost was fat and always eating, that he reminded Dan of John. That's all.

Isn't there already a thread about Slimer's origin?

I'll say here what I said there: The Remlis backstory works fine by me.

Mine: he's what's known as a “Hungry Demon” in Japanese folklore. Given that Hungry Demons are the spiritual representations of people who were gluttonous in all aspects of their mortal lives. They'd come back with massive hunger (not just appetite) that could never be satiated.

I like to think he's the ghost of Mr. Creosote, myself.

He's actually the ghost of the late tv gameshow presenter, Bruce Onionhead
