Well, as a description of what it did wasn't given, it may not have been meant to be a gas sniffer in the film universe.

I wonder where the Ghost Sniffer name came from… if it was from something official or if it just got called that by the fans.

I think there was a toy released under the RGB toyline that used that name and was based off of the movie prop.
Can't remember for sure.

In the commentary of the first movie Ivan Reitmen mentioned that they has a real person who studies the paranormal such as ghost come in and help discuss what kind of props the ghostbusters might use to find ghost.

He mentioned that the guy said that you might find changes in the electric field or possibly some oders that might be present. They then asked Bill to look at these “equipment” they had and asked him to pick out the funniest looking prop to which he chose that “sniffer.”

Yes it is a sniffer that detects gas leaks, but a ghost catcher might be able to use it to detect the residues of a nearby ghost. I also believe Harold called it a “ghost sniffer” a few times.

Just to further confuse the issue, there's a DiC model sheet of it which refers to it as “Ghost Detector”

The exact link is half way down the second group of links.

It was just ur everyday 1980's gas detector. I use more modern ones at work, slightly smaller, automatic, but we still have the wand on the end.

We use em when we work in a confined space to make sure the oxygen level is acceptable and that there is no gos build up which could lead to ka-boom.

Ghost hunters use them to detect changes in the air, coz as mentioned above ghosts tended to give of certian gases that can be detected.

Only way to prove it is to have like an area have one readiing and then an area a meter way have a drastically different reading.

But thats all Venkman is using.
