I just now noticed this topic… *shrug*
I would like to see fan-owned sites make a come back. Since the fan fic section of this site went up (as well as the popularization of
fanfiction.net), all the big name GB sites like Doreen and Sheila, etc have blinked right out of existence. Sure the sites themselves are still around, but they haven't been updated in years. My site the Nexus is in this category as well, but I'd still like to be around. When I spoke to Chad about this, he sort of tap-danced around or ignored my concerns (not that I'm trying to start a fight). He did say that people putting content on GBN would make small sites like mine more popular, but I just don't see it. Maybe I'm missing something. Small time places become popular when their content is regularly expanding, not when its out-sourced to someplace else. Unless you only post a portion of your story to entice people to come read the rest at your site and hope they check the rest of the content, but that's not always a guarantee. Or, like Fritz, you simply post a link.
I know I'm probably alone in this idea, and I don't expect that the fan fiction section is going to be scraped just because I said so. Fan sites survive on fan-made content, places like GBN and GBfans survive mostly on fan-to-fan interactions. Ida know, maybe certain limitations might be mutually beneficial. Maybe it could be more like a catalog than an actual fiction section… maybe like a search engine of sorts where users can submit links to their stories wherever they may be, plus a couple vital keywords, ghost name, author name, etc.
I just miss kicking it old school, I guess.
