the Junior Ghostbusters

I was watching Halloween II 1/2 earlier–it's one of my favorite episodes–but it's been quite a while since I've watched it( last I believe I really paid attention to it was around 5-10 years ago, when I was in my late teens/early ‘20s.

So, after going thru all the Lorenzo Music episodes officially, I’m now up to everything past that…and started with this one( although to be fair, several weeks prior I already watched Flip Side–my all time favorite–and Transylvanian Homesick Blues).

I have to say it…the Junior Ghostbusters *really* drive me nuts. You want to smack them at every turn. They're scared sh!tless of ghosts, and even in several scenes, you can tell the Ghostbusters THEMSELVES don't take them very seriously. The Jr. GBs actually play off that slightly.

I mean…Dave Coulier is one thing, and with the way they changed the relationship with Venkman and Slimer, but good lord….

every time the Jr. Ghostbusters talk, I just keep going “shut up”.

Good lord are they annoying…really, really really annoying.

I totally understand now–more than ever–why JMS wanted them “run over with a truck”.

Knowing this, here's now my offer to the Real Ghostbusters:

I'll gladly accept the Extreme Ghostbusters with welcome arms, if they will aim their plasma blasters at the Jr. Ghostbusters, and fire; fair?

LOL, yea, they're annoying now… when you were a kid though, they were cool, cuz that was your dream, so the producers played on that.

We may love the franchise and want to watch the episodes now as adults, but you have to accept the fact that some of the stories and aspects just won't play out the same way.

I mean, hell, Slimer gets freakin annoying beyond belief in some episodes.

How come “Halloween II 1/2” is your fave eppy, if it has the JGBs in it? Or do you mean it was before you rewatched it?

Yeah, I think that episode should have been a Ghostbusters-only story. They took up too much time that could've been directed towards Samhaine and his plans. But, I have to defend their role in “The Bogeyman is Back”. The original Bogeyman ep had kids too, and I think if they brought the Carter kids back, it would have been a bit derivative. Plus, they do play a useful role in the plot, unlike in the Halloween ep - giving Egon the strength he needed to overcome ol' Bogey, as Kenny and Megan did in the earlier story.

He said it was “one of his favorites”, and the plot can still be enjoyed despite the Junior Ghostbusters because they're inconsequential to it.

bringing back the Carter children wouldn't have been necessary, but the Junior Ghostbusters were not necessary either, it could either have been some other random group of kids… or it may not have even needed any given group of kids to resolve the story of the Boogieman's return. And their actions could easily have been supplanted by Janine and Slimer.

Halloween II 1/2 is one of my favorite episodes because it's a Halloween episode, it involves Samhaine, and he turns their base into his own fortress, which totally rules.

I just have to “edit” the Jr. Ghostbusters out of my mind while watching it.

Slimer can get annoying, yes, but believe it or not I still love a lot of the comedy relief in ‘80s cartoons, for the main reason that they bring a childlike theme to a really serious situation; it’s for that reason I love Snarf, Orko is one of my favorite MOTU characters, and Scott & T-Bob are *mildly* growing on me.

One thing I love about the comedy relief characters is that…they actually do manage to save the day once in a while, which I give ‘em a lot of credit for…even if they main characters won’t.

Actually, as a kid, the Jr. Ghostbusters didn't do much for me either. Believe it or not, upon watching Halloween II 1/2 for the first time again 10 years ago, I didn't even remember the Jr. Ghostbusters being in it; for all I know, I might've found them so annoying–even then–that I edited them out of my memory of that episode. The only thing I really remembered them in was those Slimer cartoons which–even back THEN–I thought were god-awful.

The Bogeyman is Back was the one chance at redemption those little sh*ts actually had, in my mind…and they utterly blew it when THEY didn't use the proton packs on the Bogeyman. They then proceeded to look “tough and cool” throwing the packs to the ‘Busters. L-A-M-E.

Someone actually posted here a while back that the episode would’ve been better sans their appearance; I fully agree.

In fact, ANYTHING without them is automatically better.

Please, Vigo, drown them in the river of slime! Egon, throw them into the Netherworld! Stay Puft…CRUSH ‘EM! Eduardo & Garrett…FIRE WHEN READY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, so far, most of the episodes now are even better than they were not only back then…but also WHEN I WAS A TEEN.

When I was a kid, all I cared about was watching them blast and trap a ghost. As a teen, I wanted to see some really awesome looking spirits. Now, I care a lot more about the story and a lot of the inside jokes and whatnot, and the things I used to be most concerned about just make the stories even better.

One thing I have to accept is that most of the stories with Dave Coulier are just harder to watch because they literally altered the relationship he had with Slimer, upon Lorenzo Music leaving…and as the show entered 1990, the animation got painfully bad, and even had a few intelligence-insulting episodes.

They had several greats after Lorenzo Music, Arsenio Hall, and Laura Summer parted–don’t get me wrong–but the show was really at its peak during the first season, and into syndication.

ironically, I think the animation was at its best during Season 2, in 1988.
