Oh yea, one of the reasons I mentioned writing quality was because I've been mostly unimpressed (just unimpressed, not disappointed) with the first 4 or so that I watched. I guess from what I've read that the show hit its stride in syndication? Also, do the voices change a little bit over time (I'm not talking recasts)? They don't sound quite right to me, so they were either refined or I'm remembering wrong, or it's just an audio issue.

My feelings exactly. Personally, I just don't like how cartoony the first few episodes were(i.e., the PKE meter going off the charts, leading to an arrow busting through the side), and the humor just seems kind of forced. But I know the show gets better. As the voice actors settle into their roles(anyone else notice “role” misspelled as “roll” in the LaMarche interview?), they will get better as well.

from what i remember… Egon's voice the first few episodes of the series was different than the rest of the series. but like Kaspir said, they were just starting out and trying to figure out what worked best at the time. In the end… i think they got the Egon voice just right.

it also says Slimmer in one of the interview titles :-) One thing that was laughable was the bad Welker impression on the introductions.

Here's a short preview of what fans can expect from the music/effects tracks!

The first few episodes, the writers obviously haven't hit their stride. But there are some good episodes on the first few discs – stuff like “The Boogieman Cometh,” “Look Homeward, Ray,” “Knock, Knock,” “The Spirit of Aunt Lois,” and “When Halloween Was Forever.” I think Boogieman is on Vol 1 Disc 1, the rest are spread out between Discs 2 thru 5. Ghostbusters seems to have two kinds of episodes (not counting the bad episodes):

1) Straightforward stories, with clever dialogue, and;
2) Clever stories, also with clever dialogue.

The show hit its stride with the syndication eps, as you mentioned, probably due to not having BSP standards to deal with.

Vol 3 Disc 3 is where I'll probably take an extended break, since that's when Venkman's voice was replaced by the (I'll say it, we're all thinking it) markedly inferior Dave Coulier, who “oughta know” he can't hold a candle to Lorenzo Music. Kath Soucie's voice is also totally wrong for Janine, and Slimer starts speaking intelligibly and us 12 year old (at the time) fans decided it was a good time to start getting into girls or comic books or something.

I have to reiterate what a great job they did with this set. I was sure The Real Ghostbusters would be consigned to the dustbin of 1980s cartoons, destined to rot with junk like Thundercats and M.A.S.K. Personally, this was the only piece of “new” Ghostbusters stuff I ever really wanted, and now that it's out, the franchise can do whatever it wants. Even a crappy 3rd movie can't take my Real Ghostbusters DVDs away.

I have watched the first disc, and did anyone else notice that the video quality on a couple of them seems to differ from the rest? Slimer Come Home stands out for me, as the color looks more dull than the rest.

Oh come on, lol. Dave Coulier wasn't as good as Lorenzo Music, of course. But no one stopped watching the show simply because his voice changed and Slimer started talking.

That said, I completely agree that this set is one of the greatest things for Ghostbusters fans could have asked for. Its so well put together, and its something we've all wanted for so long. Ghostbusters 3, who knows what will happen… but they can't take our RGB away from us now. From now til forever, we can watch every episode of The Real Ghostbusters at any time we want.

Hi everyone!! I'm also a Canadian customer and no I haven't received my boxset yet.My very first episode I ever watched was MRS. ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD.The animation was very good and so the story with clever jokes.The villain was quite cool and Peter being possessed at the end was kinda dramatic for a 11 years old watcher.Can't wait for this collection!!

I received my set on Tuesday (a very pleasent surprise when I got home from work) and I've been living it up ever since.

First thing I watched was the bonus disc. It was funny because, though no one would directly say it, everyone pretty much admitted that the first 78 episodes were the best and that there is a steady decrease in the quality of the show after those first season episodes. Usually when a show is released as a box set, they try to really push the whole “everything is great; it never jumped the shark” agenda. But I guess when you do a complete series release, you're more inclined to tell fans “Yeah, we know you really bought this set for about half the episodes.”

I found the interviews to very candid and straight forward and I was particularly touched by Maurice Lamarche's comments concerning Lorenzo Music. You could clearly see that he thought very highly of Lorenzo and that he was fighting back tears when remembering him.

As for the show, it holds up well for a 23 year old children's animation program. Some episodes are better than others, but what show isn't that true for? The real lesson here for any television executive is “If it ain't broke, don't fix it.” Shows like RGB, Ducktales, Batman, all pushed the medium forward and audiences responded with overwhelming approval and support. But of course executives had to step in and “improve” the show and the show's quality (and audience) subsequently declined. For all the fond memories of RGB, it was essentially a show whose legacy was defined by it's first season (much like Ducktales and Batman).
