Oh yea, one of the reasons I mentioned writing quality was because I've been mostly unimpressed (just unimpressed, not disappointed) with the first 4 or so that I watched. I guess from what I've read that the show hit its stride in syndication? Also, do the voices change a little bit over time (I'm not talking recasts)? They don't sound quite right to me, so they were either refined or I'm remembering wrong, or it's just an audio issue.
The first few episodes, the writers obviously haven't hit their stride. But there are some good episodes on the first few discs – stuff like “The Boogieman Cometh,” “Look Homeward, Ray,” “Knock, Knock,” “The Spirit of Aunt Lois,” and “When Halloween Was Forever.” I think Boogieman is on Vol 1 Disc 1, the rest are spread out between Discs 2 thru 5. Ghostbusters seems to have two kinds of episodes (not counting the bad episodes):
1) Straightforward stories, with clever dialogue, and;
2) Clever stories, also with clever dialogue.
The show hit its stride with the syndication eps, as you mentioned, probably due to not having BSP standards to deal with.
Vol 3 Disc 3 is where I'll probably take an extended break, since that's when Venkman's voice was replaced by the (I'll say it, we're all thinking it)
markedly inferior Dave Coulier, who “oughta know” he can't hold a candle to Lorenzo Music. Kath Soucie's voice is also totally wrong for Janine, and Slimer starts speaking intelligibly and us 12 year old (at the time) fans decided it was a good time to start getting into girls or comic books or something.
I have to reiterate what a great job they did with this set. I was sure The Real Ghostbusters would be consigned to the dustbin of 1980s cartoons, destined to rot with junk like Thundercats and M.A.S.K. Personally, this was the only piece of “new” Ghostbusters stuff I ever really wanted, and now that it's out, the franchise can do whatever it wants. Even a crappy 3rd movie can't take my Real Ghostbusters DVDs away.
