The Official Real Ghostbusters DVD Q&A Thread

The first few episodes, the writers obviously haven't hit their stride. But there are some good episodes on the first few discs – stuff like “The Boogieman Cometh,” “Look Homeward, Ray,” “Knock, Knock,” “The Spirit of Aunt Lois,” and “When Halloween Was Forever.” I think Boogieman is on Vol 1 Disc 1, the rest are spread out between Discs 2 thru 5.

I must say that “Slimer, Come Home” was the first episode in the set I actually enjoyed watching(and maybe I missed something, but why wasn't Ecto-1 in the firehouse throughout that episode?). “The Boogieman Cometh” was another great one, and although I'm not going to start fearing monsters in the closet any time soon, I'll admit that the Boogieman in that episode did creep me out a little.

Episodes like the aforementioned two reminded me of why I loved this show so much while growing up, and I'll look forward to seeing more episodes like them.

I received my set on Tuesday (a very pleasent surprise when I got home from work) and I've been living it up ever since.

First thing I watched was the bonus disc. It was funny because, though no one would directly say it, everyone pretty much admitted that the first 78 episodes were the best and that there is a steady decrease in the quality of the show after those first season episodes. Usually when a show is released as a box set, they try to really push the whole “everything is great; it never jumped the shark” agenda. But I guess when you do a complete series release, you're more inclined to tell fans “Yeah, we know you really bought this set for about half the episodes.”

… For all the fond memories of RGB, it was essentially a show whose legacy was defined by it's first season (much like Ducktales and Batman).

I agree completely. In the later episodes, it even looks like they have fewer colors of paint to choose from, or an incompetent color stylist – compare what the ocean looks like in “Devil in the Deep” with the much later episode “Attack of the B-Movie Monsters.” Not to mention the animation in some places looks like 4 FPS or something vs. the usual 12 for TV. Maybe all the budget was going to the Slimer! cartoons, leaving very little left for the RGB part of the show…

The strangest change by far is what they did to Janine. I can understand them moving Slimer to the forefront, because that's how executives think, but changing Janine's hair, glasses, voice, and character completely? Ridiculous.

Does anybody know why Frank Welker isn't on any of the interviews? Did this question come up already, and I just missed it?

I wonder if he was just too busy or what. Did anyone notice the episodes with “introductions” have someone doing a bad impression of his no ghost logo voice? haha “And now a special message about this episode of the Real Ghostbusters” Maybe he didn't have time or would have been too big of an expense to have him record something new for it.

I also agree for the first 78 episodes but I kinda like the next 13 too. With the sequel to When Halloween Was Forever and Transylvanian Homesick Blues which I think were good episodes as far as I can remember.

Yea I'm surprised that I don't remember being terrified by the Boogieman (or really any episodes) as a kid.

Was the concept of a Boogieman/monster lair that links together all closet doors something that had been around for a while, or is the RGB episode the first major time it appeared? Because that idea has since been in movies like Little Monsters and Monsters Inc.

I was really pleased to see Maurice LaMarche so enthusiastic about his involvement in the interview and such, and part of what he said about Welker in the interview might kind of explain why he wasn't involved with the set at all: LaMarche spoke about how Welker has played an enormous number of roles, as can be found on his IMDB page. Maybe he just wants to avoid dealing with very many of the latest new things going on with old series he's been in, as he's just been in so much stuff that he doesn't want lots of people coming after him to do interviews or other things like that.

Considering that he's played such an incredible number of roles, it's also possible that RGB doesn't hold any particular significance to him, and so he wouldn't care to do interviews about it. I doubt very much of the work he's done would be too memorable to him, after having done so much.

Then of course, it's also possible that Welker was just busy, or didn't think he was getting a good enough offer in order to agree to involve himself with the set. In any case, I'm just glad that at least LaMarche was involved.

Can anyone confirm which opening credits is used for “The Halloween Door”? The Standard credit sequence or the special one used as it originally aired on the network?

I think the next 13 are very good.

For me, the decline in quality really comes after the second season.

There's a dip from the first to the second season and a bigger dip from the second season to third.

Looking at the title cards on the bonus disc,I had actually forgotten how cartoony the animation had become by the end.

I think by that point I was probably only watching the show if something CBS was running was a repeat.

Which brings me to a strange realization. I have almost no memory of watching this show on Saturday mornings. I know I did, but 95% of my memories with this show seem to be of watching it on syndication.

Fox 5, which was a baby network when I was a kid in the 80's, used to run it weekdays at 4:30 p.m. The show kind of served as the conclusion to weekday cartoons as it was followed by either the news or a talk show. I can remember those episodes so clearly, but my saturday morning memories are a little fuzzier. I don't know if it's a simple memory lapse or if the syndicated episodes content stood out more, but some of the episodes I'm watching almost feel new.

I have almost the same memories! Our local Fox station here in Jacksonville, FL (Fox30) showed RGB at 4:30, then Charles In Charge (I would immediately change it, I think Brave Starr was on the other channel which is just as bad). For a couple years, RGB was at 4:30 and then TMNT at 5:00… a full hour of bliss! What a great time to be a kid!

I remember watching it on Saturdays but by that time, Dave Coulier and Kath Soucie had come in, and Slimer was starting to take over, so it was less and less interesting. TMNT became my cartoon of choice. That show started to tank, too, plus by then I was into junior high and was becoming the butt of jokes for being into this stuff, so I buried my nose into the grim-n-gritty TMNT comics (marginally more socially acceptable)…

Now of course this stuff is cool again! I can wear my Ghostbusters T-shirt without fear of ridicule or rejection!

anybody have a clue why some of the commentaries have strange breaks in them? It just stops and then the logo ghost pops up saying the commentary will continue shortly. Weird. Also strange they had to bleep out Aretha Franklins name.
